| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the Dixon Water Foundation, which has been named the |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | recipient of the 2017 Leopold Conservation Award for Texas; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, This prestigious honor is awarded to landowners |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | who serve as a positive example to ranchers and other landowners |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | by demonstrating that good land management practices can be both |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | profitable and ecologically sustainable; named in honor of |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, it is conferred each year |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | by the Sand County Foundation in partnership with the Texas Parks |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | and Wildlife Department; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The Dixon Water Foundation is a nonprofit |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | organization founded in 1994 by the late Roger Dixon; it operates |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | six ranches located across the state, each of them with decades |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | of results showing that raising cattle is a sustainable and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | profitable means of building and replenishing the land which |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | leads to more water for people and wildlife; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The foundation is also committed to sponsoring |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | education and outreach efforts to raise awareness of the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | importance of water to the future of the state; its ranches have |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | worked to reestablish native grasses, which help to make the soil |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | more resilient during drought and more productive in times of |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | ample rainfall; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, The Dixon Water Foundation has hosted research |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | projects from multiple schools and colleges at its ranches; it is |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | truly fitting that this outstanding organization receive special |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | recognition for its commitment to sustainable practices; now, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby commend all associated with the Dixon Water |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Foundation on their exceptional stewardship of the land and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | extend congratulations to its management and staff on receiving |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | the 2017 Leopold Conservation Award for Texas; and, be it further |

| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
