66 AN ACT
77 relating to new mother wellness screenings under the Texas women's
88 health program.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 531, Government Code, is
1111 amended by adding Section 531.0997 to read as follows:
1212 Sec. 531.0997. TEXAS WOMEN'S HEALTH PROGRAM: NEW MOTHER
1313 WELLNESS SCREENINGS. (a) In this section, "Texas women's health
1414 program" means a program operated by the commission that is
1515 substantially similar to the demonstration project operated under
1616 former Section 32.0248, Human Resources Code, and that is intended
1717 to expand access to preventive health and family planning services
1818 for women in this state.
1919 (b) The commission shall provide on request through the
2020 Texas women's health program new mother wellness screenings to
2121 determine if program participants are at a higher risk of death from
2222 childbirth or childbirth-related complications and to determine
2323 treatment options.
2424 (c) The new mother wellness screenings provided under the
2525 Texas women's health program must include screening for common
2626 causes of maternal mortality, including:
2727 (1) mental health conditions;
2828 (2) behavioral health conditions;
2929 (3) heart conditions;
3030 (4) high blood pressure;
3131 (5) hemorrhaging; and
3232 (6) any other condition the commission determines
3333 necessary.
3434 (d) The executive commissioner shall adopt rules necessary
3535 to implement this section.
3636 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect December 1, 2017.
