55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, The passing of John M. Arévalo of San Antonio on
77 July 16, 2017, at the age of 67, has deeply saddened his loved ones
88 and the many individuals whose lives he touched throughout his long
99 and rewarding career as an educator; and
1010 WHEREAS, Born on December 29, 1949, to Johnny and Guadalupe
1111 Arévalo, John Arévalo grew up with the companionship of his four
1212 siblings, Oralia, Frank, Manuel, and Francisco, and he graduated
1313 from Fox Tech, becoming the first in his family to earn a high
1414 school diploma; he went on to complete bachelor's and master's
1515 degrees at Texas A&M University and The University of Texas at San
1616 Antonio, and he further distinguished himself through his service
1717 with the United States Peace Corps; and
1818 WHEREAS, During his four decades as a history teacher at
1919 Harlandale High School, Mr. Arévalo left a lasting impression on
2020 countless young people; he cared deeply about his students and
2121 their success beyond the walls of his classroom, and he provided
2222 many of them with invaluable mentorship and encouragement as they
2323 attended college and pursued their goals; his passion for teaching
2424 and his exceptional rapport with his students made him a role model
2525 for other educators, and his outstanding work garnered him such
2626 accolades as the Golden Rule Award; and
2727 WHEREAS, In 1987, Mr. Arévalo began teaching at Palo Alto
2828 College while continuing his work at Harlandale High, and he
2929 further contributed to his profession through his efforts as vice
3030 chair of the Advisory Council for the Hispanic Student Success
3131 Program, an initiative begun by the Hispanic Association of
3232 Colleges and Universities; he also served on a statewide task force
3333 for the review of social studies curriculum requirements; and
3434 WHEREAS, Mr. Arévalo married his high school sweetheart,
3535 Margaret, in 1973, and they shared in the joy of raising two
3636 treasured children, Alex and Diana; Mr. Arévalo delighted in
3737 supporting them in all of their pursuits as they grew into
3838 adulthood, and he watched with immense pride as his son graduated
3939 with a medical degree from Washington University of Health and
4040 Science and his daughter became a Texas state representative; and
4141 WHEREAS, Through his earnest devotion to his family, his
4242 students, and his life's work, John Arévalo was an inspiration to
4343 all who had the good fortune to know him, and although he will be
4444 deeply missed, memories of his sage advice, boundless compassion,
4545 and remarkable generosity remain as a source of comfort to those he
4646 leaves behind; now, therefore, be it
4747 RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas,
4848 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of John
4949 M. Arévalo and extend sincere condolences to his relatives and his
5050 many friends; and, be it further
5151 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5252 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5353 Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
5454 John Arévalo.
