| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, An inspiring couple whose lives have been enhanced |

| 6 | 7 | | by a great and enduring love, Al and Ruth Burkhalter of Mount |

| 7 | 8 | | Pleasant celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 21, |

| 8 | 9 | | 2017; and |

| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Al Burkhalter and the former Ruth Speas met on the |

| 10 | 11 | | campus of Miltonvale Wesleyan College in Miltonvale, Kansas, and |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | following a romantic proposal from outside her dorm room window, |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | they exchanged the vows of matrimony in 1967; with the passing |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | years, their family has grown to include their two sons, Chad and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | his wife, Cammy, and Travis and his wife, Beth, as well as their |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | eight grandchildren, Cole, Cara Beth, Christina, Caroline, |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | Isabella, Sophia, Isaac, and Joy; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Burkhalter are longtime educators who |

| 18 | 19 | | have worked in a number of cities in South Dakota and in Mount |

| 19 | 20 | | Pleasant; Mr. Burkhalter served as a math teacher and basketball, |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | football, and track coach over the course of his 45-year career, |

| 21 | 22 | | while Mrs. Burkhalter specialized in teaching reading to |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | elementary students during her 37 years in the classroom; they have |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | always been active in their church, holding a number of leadership |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | roles at Linwood Wesleyan Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, |

| 25 | 26 | | before becoming valued congregants of South Jefferson Baptist |

| 26 | 27 | | Church in Mount Pleasant; and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, While much has changed in the world over the past |

| 28 | 29 | | half century, this devoted husband and wife have remained constant |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | in their commitment to each other, and the strength of their love |

| 30 | 31 | | has enabled them to meet life's challenges and opportunities with |

| 31 | 32 | | grace and optimism; now, therefore, be it |

| 32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 33 | 34 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Al and Ruth |
