45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, The life of an esteemed musician and educator drew
67 to a close with the passing of Edward G. Olivares of Corpus Christi
78 on June 21, 2017, at the age of 86; and
89 WHEREAS, Eddie Olivares was born to Audelio and Susana
910 Olivares on February 28, 1931, in Mercedes, and he grew up with the
1011 companionship of six siblings; his brother gave him his first
1112 trumpet when he was 12, and by the age of 14 he was playing in dance
1213 bands; a 1949 graduate of Corpus Christi High School, Mr. Olivares
1314 continued his education at Del Mar College, earning an associate
1415 degree in 1952; he then served for two years in the U.S. Army, where
1516 he played in the band and the jazz orchestra; and
1617 WHEREAS, Following his return to civilian life, Mr. Olivares
1718 earned bachelor's and master's degrees in music at The University of
1819 Texas at Austin; he began his career in education at Lamar Junior
1920 High School in Laredo; seeking more opportunities to play live
2021 music, he moved back to Corpus Christi, accepting a teaching
2122 position at Sundeen Junior High; in 1967, he became band director at
2223 Moody High School, a post he held until 1975, and over the
2324 succeeding years, he worked as a counselor at Carroll High, King
2425 High, and Del Mar College before retiring in 1995; he also directed
2526 the Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi jazz ensemble from 2002 to
2627 2007; and
2728 WHEREAS, Mr. Olivares gave generously of his time and talents
2829 to a number of music organizations, including the American
2930 Federation of Musicians Local 644 and the Corpus Christi Symphony
3031 Orchestra, Municipal Band, and Arts Council; moreover, he helped
3132 found the Texas Jazz Festival, served as choir director at Christ
3233 the King Church and St. Patrick Church, and started the jazz mass at
3334 Holy Cross Church; in recognition of his many accomplishments, he
3435 was inducted into the Texas Music Educators Association Region XIV
3536 Band Directors Hall of Fame and the Water Street Market South Texas
3637 Music Walk of Fame; and
3738 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Olivares enjoyed the love
3839 and support of his wife, Emilie; he was the proud father of four
3940 children, Edward, Paul, Mary, and Michael, and he also treasured
4041 the time he spent with his grandson, David; and
4142 WHEREAS, Although he is greatly missed, Eddie Olivares has
4243 left his family and friends with many cherished memories, and he
4344 will forever hold a special place in their hearts; now, therefore,
4445 be it
4546 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4647 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
4748 of Edward G. Olivares and extend heartfelt sympathy to his loved
4849 ones and many friends; and, be it further
4950 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5051 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5152 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Eddie
5253 Olivares.
