No. 128 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Hugo De La Cruz is celebrating 50 years in radio in July 2017, and this milestone provides an ideal opportunity to honor him for his outstanding career and his contributions to the Rio Grande Valley; and WHEREAS, Born in Miguel Aleman, Tamaulipas, Mexico, in 1945, Mr. De La Cruz gained experience as a DJ in Camargo before joining Harlingen station KGBT-AM on July 11, 1967; a few months later, he received a major assignment, broadcasting information to Hispanic residents as deadly Hurricane Beulah bore down on South Texas; he went on to lead a humanitarian effort to Honduras following Hurricane Fifi, and he reported by telephone as he traveled with the five shrimp boats delivering aid; and WHEREAS, Mr. De La Cruz launched Football Scoreboard in 1975, and it became one of the country's highest-rated radio sports programs in its time frame; his avid listeners even recorded corridos for their favorite teams to be played on his show, a phenomenon that gained national attention; as Scoreboard flourished, he also launched Y ahora usted opina, a call-in show addressing community concerns, and he rose to become program director of the station; since moving to Super Tejano 102.1-FM, he has continued to host his iconic football forum and created a new call-in program, Mi Valle, Mi Voz; and WHEREAS, Over the years, Mr. De La Cruz has helped many listeners in need, connecting them with resources and services, and he has raised millions of dollars for St. Jude Children's Hospital; he has been a Catholic deacon for 25 years and currently serves at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Donna; and WHEREAS, For half a century, Hugo De La Cruz has informed, entertained, and assisted residents of the Rio Grande Valley, and in so doing, he has earned the admiration and affection of countless Texans; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Hugo De La Cruz on his 50th anniversary in radio and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, Than an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. De La Cruz as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
