56 WHEREAS, Lucy Dean Record of Lockney was recognized for her
67 many achievements as a musician and teacher by the Floyd County
78 Commissioners Court on June 12, 2017; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in 1924, the former Lucy Dean Rose began
910 studying piano at the age of four, and just three years later, she
1011 was performing as an organist at First United Methodist Church in
1112 Lockney, where she continues to play to this day; she went on to
1213 attend Texas Tech University and then the Draughon School of
1314 Business, and she later earned a teaching certificate from the
1415 St. Louis Institute of Music; and
1516 WHEREAS, This admired musician married the love of her life,
1617 Charles L. Record, in 1942, and they shared nearly half a century
1718 together before his passing in 1991; she answered her nation's call
1819 to duty during World War II, serving as a secretary in the U.S. Army
1920 Air Corps on bases in Kansas, Louisiana, and Texas; and
2021 WHEREAS, After returning to Lockney in 1946, Mrs. Record
2122 began working as a full-time piano teacher, with as many as 90
2223 pupils a week, and she still enjoys sharing her expertise with her
2324 students today; over the years, she has also performed in a number
2425 of bands, including Jimmy Burson and Texas in the Swing, Denim and
2526 Lace II, Billy Mata and the Texas Tradition, and Floyd Domino's
2627 All-Stars; a virtuoso of the Texas western swing style, she is
2728 particularly known for her signature rendition of the American
2829 standard "It Had to Be You"; and
2930 WHEREAS, The recipient of a host of prestigious honors,
3031 Mrs. Record was presented with the Will Rogers Award in the
3132 instrumentalist category at the Academy of Western Artists Awards
3233 in 2013; moreover, she was named a Hero in the Cowtown Guild in 2012
3334 and inducted into the Western Swing Music Society of the Southwest
3435 Hall of Fame in 2011; and
3536 WHEREAS, For more than seven decades, Lucy Dean Record has
3637 delighted audiences across the Lone Star State and instilled a love
3738 of music in generations of students, and it is indeed a pleasure to
3839 join in honoring her for her many contributions to the rich musical
3940 heritage of Texas; now, therefore, be it
4041 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4142 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Lucy Dean
4243 Record on her inspiring work as a musician and teacher and extend to
4344 her sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and,
4445 be it further
4546 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4647 prepared for Mrs. Record as an expression of high regard by the
4748 Texas House of Representatives.
