45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A statue of Nestora Granillo Piarote of the Tigua
67 tribe was unveiled during a ceremony at the Tigua Indian Cultural
78 Center in El Paso on July 16, 2017; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in 1849 and raised in the Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo,
910 Nestora Granillo Piarote was a celebrated potter and a native
1011 speaker of the Tiwa language; by the time of her passing in 1918,
1112 she had become a highly respected figure in the Tigua community, and
1213 today, hundreds of members of the tribe are counted among her
1314 descendants; and
1415 WHEREAS, Created by local sculptor Julio Sanchez de Alba, the
1516 bronze of this venerated matriarch is 12 feet tall and weighs one
1617 and a half tons, and it is mounted atop a seven-foot base; in
1718 addition to honoring the memory of its subject, the artwork also
1819 pays tribute to all tribal women; and
1920 WHEREAS, The statue is the latest addition to the Ysleta Del
2021 Sur Pueblo's Tigua Indian Cultural Center, which provides an
2122 introduction to the tribe's five centuries of history in the El Paso
2223 region through exhibits and artifacts; it regularly hosts Native
2324 American dances and bread-baking demonstrations, and its gift shop
2425 features a variety of authentic Tigua pottery, jewelry, and
2526 clothing; and
2627 WHEREAS, This striking new sculpture is an impressive
2728 contribution to the cultural legacy of Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo, and
2829 all those associated with its creation and installation may take
2930 pride in a job well done; now, therefore, be it
3031 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
3132 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the dedication
3233 of the statue of Nestora Granillo Piarote at the Tigua Indian
3334 Cultural Center and extend to the center's staff sincere best
3435 wishes for continued success in their important work; and, be it
3536 further
3637 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3738 prepared for the Tigua Indian Cultural Center as an expression of
3839 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
