| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in 1849 and raised in the Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo, |

| 9 | 10 | | Nestora Granillo Piarote was a celebrated potter and a native |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | speaker of the Tiwa language; by the time of her passing in 1918, |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | she had become a highly respected figure in the Tigua community, and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | today, hundreds of members of the tribe are counted among her |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | descendants; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Created by local sculptor Julio Sanchez de Alba, the |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | bronze of this venerated matriarch is 12 feet tall and weighs one |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | and a half tons, and it is mounted atop a seven-foot base; in |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | addition to honoring the memory of its subject, the artwork also |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | pays tribute to all tribal women; and |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, The statue is the latest addition to the Ysleta Del |

| 20 | 21 | | Sur Pueblo's Tigua Indian Cultural Center, which provides an |

| 21 | 22 | | introduction to the tribe's five centuries of history in the El Paso |

| 22 | 23 | | region through exhibits and artifacts; it regularly hosts Native |

| 23 | 24 | | American dances and bread-baking demonstrations, and its gift shop |

| 24 | 25 | | features a variety of authentic Tigua pottery, jewelry, and |

| 25 | 26 | | clothing; and |

| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, This striking new sculpture is an impressive |

| 27 | 28 | | contribution to the cultural legacy of Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo, and |

| 29 | 30 | | pride in a job well done; now, therefore, be it |

| 30 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
