| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed Texan is truly |

| 6 | 7 | | cause for celebration, and Ethel Mae Chandler of Houston is |

| 7 | 8 | | reaching that impressive milestone on August 5, 2017; and |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Ethel Mae Chandler was born in Taylor, Louisiana, in |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | 1917, the oldest of the three children of Nora Davis and Jack |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | Taylor; she is the proud mother of eight children, and she has also |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | taken great joy in welcoming into her family five grandchildren and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Chandler worked for many years in the cafeteria |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | of a Veterans Administration hospital, where she became the first |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | African American to operate the electric cash register; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, For half a century, Mrs. Chandler has been an active |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | congregant of Greater Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, and she |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | has sung in the choir, helped with the cooking for church events, |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | worked with young people, and participated in missionary efforts; |

| 20 | 21 | | in addition, she is a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the |

| 21 | 22 | | Court of Calanthians; and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Ethel Mae Chandler has witnessed a panorama of |

| 24 | 25 | | challenges and opportunities with dignity and grace, earning the |
