| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The life of an admired civil rights leader drew to a |

| 6 | 7 | | close with the passing of Jaime Martinez of San Antonio on July 16, |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A native of San Antonio, Jaime Martinez was raised |

| 9 | 10 | | in a barrio on the city's West Side and attended Lanier High School; |

| 10 | 11 | | he first began advocating for the rights of area migrant workers as |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | a young man and went on to enjoy a career as a union organizer; over |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | the years, he helped coordinate marches around the country, |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | including the annual Cesar Chavez March for Justice in San Antonio; |
|---|

|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In 1996, Mr. Martinez founded the Cesar E. Chavez |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | Legacy and Educational Foundation with the mission of preserving |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | the legacy of its namesake; the organization advocates for social |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | and economic justice and promotes civic participation, and each |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | year, it awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to deserving |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | area students; in addition, in 2011, Mr. Martinez played an |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | instrumental role in the renaming of Durango Boulevard in San |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | Antonio as Cesar Chavez Boulevard; and |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Jaime Martinez contributed immeasurably to the |

| 24 | 25 | | lives of his fellow citizens, and although he will be deeply missed, |

| 25 | 26 | | his devotion to his community will forever remain a source of |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | inspiration to all who were privileged to know him; now, therefore, |
