| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A life devoted to family, faith, and community drew |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | to a close with the passing of Starr County commissioner Raul "Roy" |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Peña Jr. on June 17, 2017, at the age of 67; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born on August 11, 1949, in Roma to Raul and Minerva |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Peña, Roy Peña grew up with the companionship of his brother and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | four sisters; after high school, he attended Pan American |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | University, where he met the love of his life, Lucila Trevino; they |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | graduated from the university in 1972 and were joined in matrimony |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | on October 27, 1973; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Peña began his career as an educator in 1972 |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | with the Roma Independent School District and went on to teach for |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | La Joya ISD; he entered politics following his mother's death, in a |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | bid to complete her term as a Starr County justice of the peace; |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | after his election, he continued serving in that position for a |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | total of 21 years; in 1998, he sought and won the office of county |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | commissioner for Precinct 2, and he faithfully carried out his |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | duties in that role for nearly two decades; among the many projects |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | he worked on over the years, he considered his greatest |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | achievements to be the development of the Starr County Memorial and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Veterans Memorial Cemeteries; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, A dedicated leader and mentor, Mr. Peña was also a |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | loving husband and the proud father of two children, Raul and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Monica; his life was further enriched by the affection he shared |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | with his cherished grandchildren, Analiza, Yamil, and Raul, and he |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | additionally treasured the many friendships he made in the course |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | of his work; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Renowned for his steadfast integrity and his deep |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | commitment to fairness and justice, Roy Peña will forever be |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | remembered with admiration by all those who had the good fortune to |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | know him; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | of Raul "Roy" Peña Jr. and extend sincere sympathy to all those who |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | mourn his passing; and, be it further |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Roy Peña. |
