5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the |

6 | 7 | | passing of John Mills Carter Sr. of Fort Worth on June 23, 2017, at |

7 | 8 | | the age of 81; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Mr. Carter was |
---|
9 | 10 | | born on June 6, 1936; he graduated from Booker T. Washington High |
---|
10 | 11 | | School in 1955, and after completing his education at Spaulding |
---|
11 | 12 | | Business College, he followed in his father's footsteps by |
---|
12 | 13 | | embarking on a career in the food service industry; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Carter owned a small café and nightclub in |
---|
14 | 15 | | Louisiana before moving to Texas in 1961; he went on to manage |
---|
15 | 16 | | several restaurants in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and in 1992, he |
---|
16 | 17 | | opened John Carter's Place in Fort Worth; under his leadership, the |
---|
17 | 18 | | restaurant became a mainstay within the community, and over the |
---|
18 | 19 | | years, it received a number of honors, including multiple Best of |
---|
19 | 20 | | Tarrant County awards; after closing that establishment, |
---|
20 | 21 | | Mr. Carter continued to operate a catering business before passing |
---|
21 | 22 | | the reins on to his family; and |
---|
22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan earned a host of accolades for |
---|
23 | 24 | | his professional and civic engagement; he was recognized as a |
---|
24 | 25 | | Coca-Cola African-American Hero, a Quest for Success honoree, and a |
---|
25 | 26 | | Dr. Marion J. Brooks Living Legend, and he also received an award |
---|
26 | 27 | | for his advocacy in behalf of the youth of Tarrant County; and |
---|
27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Sustained by a deep and abiding faith, John Carter |
---|
28 | 29 | | was a longtime congregant at the Greater Mount Tabor Christian |
---|
29 | 30 | | Center, where he sang baritone with the senior choir; he |
---|
30 | 31 | | additionally served the church as a deacon and Sunday school |
---|
31 | 32 | | teacher and as a member of the executive leadership council and the |
---|
32 | 33 | | food service ministry; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Carter was a devoted husband to his wife of 55 |
---|
34 | 35 | | years, Louella, and the proud father of three children, Robert, |
---|
35 | 36 | | Denise, and John Carter Jr.; he also took great delight in time |
---|
36 | 37 | | spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and |
---|
37 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Although John Carter will be deeply missed, he has |
---|
38 | 39 | | left his family and friends with a wealth of memories that they will |
---|
39 | 40 | | forever treasure; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
---|
41 | 42 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of |
---|
42 | 43 | | John Mills Carter Sr. and extend sincere condolences to all those |
---|
43 | 44 | | who mourn his passing; and, be it further |
---|
44 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
45 | 46 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
46 | 47 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John |

47 | 48 | | Carter. |
