5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the |

6 | 7 | | passing of Sarah Ann Mettauer Summers on May 25, 2017, at the age of |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Ada Lee and Charles Mettauer, the |
---|
9 | 10 | | former Sarah Mettauer was born in Lufkin on August 22, 1922; after |
---|
10 | 11 | | graduating from Lufkin High School, she attended Stephen F. Austin |
---|
11 | 12 | | State University; in 1941, she exchanged the vows of matrimony with |
---|
12 | 13 | | Frank Summers, whom she had met on a blind date in high school, and |
---|
13 | 14 | | they enjoyed a rewarding marriage that spanned 45 years until his |
---|
14 | 15 | | passing; the couple were the proud parents of 3 children, Sally |
---|
15 | 16 | | Coke, Suzy Valentine, and Jim Summers, and Mrs. Summers had the |
---|
16 | 17 | | pleasure of watching her family grow to include 10 grandchildren, |

17 | 18 | | Lawson, Chelsea, Lauren, Austin, Sarah, Richard, Larry, Cameron, |
---|
18 | 19 | | Collin, and Chari, and 12 great-grandchildren, Sydney, Quinn, Jack, |
---|
19 | 20 | | Bryson, Daphne, Dahlia, Ethan, Arionna, Richard, Benjamin, Mabel, |

20 | 21 | | and Nathan; and |

21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Dedicated to giving back to her community, |

22 | 23 | | Mrs. Summers shared her time and talents with a number of |
---|
23 | 24 | | worthwhile causes over the years; she volunteered with women's |

24 | 25 | | shelters in Austin and Cherokee County and sat on the board of |
---|
25 | 26 | | directors for the Texas State Railroad; she and her husband both |
---|
26 | 27 | | served as president of the Cherokee County Heritage Commission, and |
---|
27 | 28 | | they were instrumental in bringing the historical Texas State |
---|
28 | 29 | | Railroad to Rusk; moreover, she was a longtime congregant of the |
---|
29 | 30 | | First United Methodist Church of Rusk and a member of the Red Hat |
---|
30 | 31 | | Society; and |
---|
31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Above all else, Mrs. Summers was devoted to her |
---|
32 | 33 | | loved ones, and later in life, she moved to Austin to be close to |
---|
33 | 34 | | them; she delighted in spending time with her children, |
---|
34 | 35 | | grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and enjoyed attending their |
---|
35 | 36 | | games and recitals; in her free time, she also counted traveling, |
---|
36 | 37 | | dancing, rooting for the Texas Longhorns, and playing poker and |
---|
37 | 38 | | golf among her favorite pastimes; and |
---|
38 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Sarah Summers will long be remembered for her |
---|
39 | 40 | | kindness, strength of character, and buoyant spirit, and those who |
---|
40 | 41 | | are fortunate enough to have known her will forever hold her close |
---|
41 | 42 | | in their hearts; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

43 | 44 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of |

44 | 45 | | Sarah Ann Mettauer Summers and extend sincere condolences to her |

45 | 46 | | relatives and many friends; and, be it further |

46 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
