45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the
67 passing of Sarah Ann Mettauer Summers on May 25, 2017, at the age of
78 94; and
89 WHEREAS, The daughter of Ada Lee and Charles Mettauer, the
910 former Sarah Mettauer was born in Lufkin on August 22, 1922; after
1011 graduating from Lufkin High School, she attended Stephen F. Austin
1112 State University; in 1941, she exchanged the vows of matrimony with
1213 Frank Summers, whom she had met on a blind date in high school, and
1314 they enjoyed a rewarding marriage that spanned 45 years until his
1415 passing; the couple were the proud parents of 3 children, Sally
1516 Coke, Suzy Valentine, and Jim Summers, and Mrs. Summers had the
1617 pleasure of watching her family grow to include 10 grandchildren,
1718 Lawson, Chelsea, Lauren, Austin, Sarah, Richard, Larry, Cameron,
1819 Collin, and Chari, and 12 great-grandchildren, Sydney, Quinn, Jack,
1920 Bryson, Daphne, Dahlia, Ethan, Arionna, Richard, Benjamin, Mabel,
2021 and Nathan; and
2122 WHEREAS, Dedicated to giving back to her community,
2223 Mrs. Summers shared her time and talents with a number of
2324 worthwhile causes over the years; she volunteered with women's
2425 shelters in Austin and Cherokee County and sat on the board of
2526 directors for the Texas State Railroad; she and her husband both
2627 served as president of the Cherokee County Heritage Commission, and
2728 they were instrumental in bringing the historical Texas State
2829 Railroad to Rusk; moreover, she was a longtime congregant of the
2930 First United Methodist Church of Rusk and a member of the Red Hat
3031 Society; and
3132 WHEREAS, Above all else, Mrs. Summers was devoted to her
3233 loved ones, and later in life, she moved to Austin to be close to
3334 them; she delighted in spending time with her children,
3435 grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and enjoyed attending their
3536 games and recitals; in her free time, she also counted traveling,
3637 dancing, rooting for the Texas Longhorns, and playing poker and
3738 golf among her favorite pastimes; and
3839 WHEREAS, Sarah Summers will long be remembered for her
3940 kindness, strength of character, and buoyant spirit, and those who
4041 are fortunate enough to have known her will forever hold her close
4142 in their hearts; now, therefore, be it
4243 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4344 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
4445 Sarah Ann Mettauer Summers and extend sincere condolences to her
4546 relatives and many friends; and, be it further
4647 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4748 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4849 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Sarah
4950 Summers.
