| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Navidad En El Barrio of Houston is celebrating its |

| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Since 1987, Navidad En El Barrio has hosted events |

| 8 | 9 | | designed to bring joy to those in need; its premier event, the |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Christmas Program, is a holiday party for children from Title I |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | schools; students from low-income families receive gifts as well as |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | books and healthy food, and an essay contest provides the |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | opportunity to win such prizes as bicycles and gift cards; at the |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | same time, by bringing a canned good for donation to a local food |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | pantry, youngsters learn that they, too, can make a positive |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | difference; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, More than 10,000 presents are distributed on the day |

| 17 | 18 | | of the party; in addition, area youth provide entertainment, which |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | shows smaller children what they might achieve by honing their own |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | talents; after an appearance by Pancho Claus, Santa Claus rides in |

| 20 | 21 | | on a motorcycle, escorted by members of the Houston Police |

| 21 | 22 | | Department Officers Riding Club, who help boys and girls develop a |

| 22 | 23 | | friendly rapport with law enforcement; and |

| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Expanding its outreach, NEEB has implemented a |

| 24 | 25 | | number of other programs, among them a party for children whose |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | mothers are incarcerated at the Harris County Jail and a dance |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | competition with lunch and door prizes for some 400 senior |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | citizens; it also takes at-risk teens to the Houston Livestock Show |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | and Rodeo and treats them to a holiday party where each guest |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | receives books and a substantial gift card; moreover, it sponsors a |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | college scholarship to encourage academic achievement among eighth |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | graders, who can qualify for an additional $500 grant every year |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | until they reach a total of $2,500 at graduation; and |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Navidad En El Barrio has benefited a host of Houston |

| 34 | 35 | | residents over the past three decades, and it is indeed a pleasure |

| 35 | 36 | | to recognize this noteworthy organization as it celebrates this |

| 36 | 37 | | significant milestone in its history; now, therefore, be it |

| 37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 38 | 39 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Navidad En El |

| 39 | 40 | | Barrio on its 30th anniversary and extend to the organization |

| 40 | 41 | | sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |

| 41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
