45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A life lived with purpose and zest drew to a close
67 with the passing of Dr. Karl B. Putnam of El Paso on July 12, 2017,
78 at the age of 69; and
89 WHEREAS, Born in Durham, North Carolina, on December 19,
910 1947, Karl Putnam grew up in Victoria and Orange; after earning his
1011 bachelor's and master's degrees in accounting from The University
1112 of Texas at Austin, he began his academic career in 1974 as a
1213 lecturer at California Polytechnic State University; he went on to
1314 do doctoral work in accounting at Oklahoma State University, and in
1415 1979, shortly before receiving his Ph.D., he joined the faculty at
1516 Texas A&M University as an assistant professor; and
1617 WHEREAS, In 1986, Dr. Putnam accepted a position as an
1718 associate professor in the Department of Accounting and Information
1819 Systems at The University of Texas at El Paso, where he taught
1920 courses in financial, managerial, and governmental/not-for-profit
2021 accounting to both undergraduate and graduate students; committed
2122 to advancing his field, he was the author or coauthor of more than
2223 50 articles published in scholarly and professional journals and
2324 held membership in the American Accounting Association and the
2425 Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants; and
2526 WHEREAS, Deeply concerned for the environment, Dr. Putnam
2627 vigorously supported clean air and anti-pollution initiatives; he
2728 also shared his passion for the natural world by leading treks with
2829 the El Paso Hiking Group, and he delighted in introducing
2930 first-time hikers to the splendors of the Franklin Mountains; his
3031 extended family held a central place in his life, and he doted on
3132 his numerous nieces and nephews; numbered among his eclectic range
3233 of enthusiasms were drones, blueberries, and intense games of
3334 Scrabble; and
3435 WHEREAS, A fiercely independent thinker with a strong moral
3536 compass, Karl Putnam dedicated himself to making the world a better
3637 place, and he will forever be remembered with warm affection by all
3738 who had the good fortune to know him; now, therefore, be it
3839 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
3940 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
4041 Dr. Karl B. Putnam and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of
4142 his family: to his partner of 20 years, Noel Rosenbaum; to his
4243 sisters, Peggy and Kay; to his brothers, Martin and Robert; and to
4344 his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
4445 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4546 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4647 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Karl
4748 Putnam.
