5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A life lived with purpose and zest drew to a close |

6 | 7 | | with the passing of Dr. Karl B. Putnam of El Paso on July 12, 2017, |

7 | 8 | | at the age of 69; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in Durham, North Carolina, on December 19, |
---|
9 | 10 | | 1947, Karl Putnam grew up in Victoria and Orange; after earning his |
---|
10 | 11 | | bachelor's and master's degrees in accounting from The University |
---|
11 | 12 | | of Texas at Austin, he began his academic career in 1974 as a |
---|
12 | 13 | | lecturer at California Polytechnic State University; he went on to |
---|
13 | 14 | | do doctoral work in accounting at Oklahoma State University, and in |
---|
14 | 15 | | 1979, shortly before receiving his Ph.D., he joined the faculty at |
---|
15 | 16 | | Texas A&M University as an assistant professor; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, In 1986, Dr. Putnam accepted a position as an |
---|
17 | 18 | | associate professor in the Department of Accounting and Information |
---|
18 | 19 | | Systems at The University of Texas at El Paso, where he taught |
---|
19 | 20 | | courses in financial, managerial, and governmental/not-for-profit |
---|
20 | 21 | | accounting to both undergraduate and graduate students; committed |
---|
21 | 22 | | to advancing his field, he was the author or coauthor of more than |
---|
22 | 23 | | 50 articles published in scholarly and professional journals and |
---|
23 | 24 | | held membership in the American Accounting Association and the |
---|
24 | 25 | | Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Deeply concerned for the environment, Dr. Putnam |
---|
26 | 27 | | vigorously supported clean air and anti-pollution initiatives; he |
---|
27 | 28 | | also shared his passion for the natural world by leading treks with |
---|
28 | 29 | | the El Paso Hiking Group, and he delighted in introducing |
---|
29 | 30 | | first-time hikers to the splendors of the Franklin Mountains; his |
---|
30 | 31 | | extended family held a central place in his life, and he doted on |
---|
31 | 32 | | his numerous nieces and nephews; numbered among his eclectic range |
---|
32 | 33 | | of enthusiasms were drones, blueberries, and intense games of |
---|
33 | 34 | | Scrabble; and |
---|
34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, A fiercely independent thinker with a strong moral |
---|
35 | 36 | | compass, Karl Putnam dedicated himself to making the world a better |
---|
36 | 37 | | place, and he will forever be remembered with warm affection by all |
---|
37 | 38 | | who had the good fortune to know him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
---|
39 | 40 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of |
---|
40 | 41 | | Dr. Karl B. Putnam and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of |

41 | 42 | | his family: to his partner of 20 years, Noel Rosenbaum; to his |
---|
42 | 43 | | sisters, Peggy and Kay; to his brothers, Martin and Robert; and to |
---|
43 | 44 | | his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further |

44 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

45 | 46 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
46 | 47 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Karl |
