5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Walter Wendler is being inaugurated as |

6 | 7 | | president of West Texas A&M University on September 15, 2017; and |

7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Wendler has served as president of WTAMU since |
---|
8 | 9 | | his appointment in September 2016, and on the occasion of his |
---|
9 | 10 | | official investiture, he will be unveiling a long-term planning |
---|
10 | 11 | | effort, WT 125, which will culminate in 2035, the school's 125th |
---|
11 | 12 | | anniversary; this exciting initiative seeks to raise the |
---|
12 | 13 | | university's national profile as a research and doctorate-granting |
---|
13 | 14 | | institution while emphasizing its focus on issues affecting the |
---|
14 | 15 | | Texas Panhandle region; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Raised in Northport, New York, Dr. Wendler received |
---|
16 | 17 | | a bachelor's degree in environmental design from Texas A&M |
---|
17 | 18 | | University, and he went on to earn a master's degree in architecture |
---|
18 | 19 | | from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in |
---|
19 | 20 | | curriculum and instruction from The University of Texas at Austin; |
---|
20 | 21 | | and |

21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, After beginning his academic career as an assistant |
---|
22 | 23 | | architecture professor at Louisiana State University, Dr. Wendler |
---|
23 | 24 | | joined the faculty of Texas A&M, where he later served as chair of |
---|
24 | 25 | | the Department of Architecture, as dean of the College of |
---|
25 | 26 | | Architecture, and as executive assistant to the president; |
---|
26 | 27 | | subsequently, he was appointed vice chancellor for planning for The |
---|
27 | 28 | | Texas A&M University System; and |
---|
28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, In 2001, Dr. Wendler became the chancellor of |
---|
29 | 30 | | Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and over the course of his |
---|
30 | 31 | | six years in that office, he oversaw an annual budget of more than |
---|
31 | 32 | | $460 million and the planning of $286 million in new buildings as |
---|
32 | 33 | | well as a 65 percent increase in research productivity; in 2007, he |
---|
33 | 34 | | returned to teaching as a member of the school's architecture |
---|
34 | 35 | | faculty, and from 2008 until his retirement from SIU in 2015, he |
---|
35 | 36 | | served as director of the School of Architecture; and |
---|
36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Walter Wendler brings a wealth of experience and |
---|
37 | 38 | | expertise to his leadership of West Texas A&M, and he may indeed |
---|
38 | 39 | | reflect with pride on his many achievements as he takes on the |
---|
39 | 40 | | challenges and opportunities of this new role; now, therefore, be |

41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

42 | 43 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Dr. Walter |
