45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, John Hince of Bryan was elected as state commander
67 of the American Legion for 2017-2018 at the 99th annual convention
78 of the Legion's Department of Texas, which took place in Killeen on
89 July 16, 2017; and
910 WHEREAS, A native of Pennsylvania, John Hince earned a
1011 bachelor's degree as a distinguished military graduate of the
1112 Virginia Military Institute in 1968, and he entered active duty
1213 with the U.S. Army in June 1969; after completing the Infantry
1314 Officers Basic Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, he received further
1415 training at Fort Stewart, Georgia, and Fort Rucker, Alabama; he
1516 served a tour of duty in Vietnam from August 1970 to August 1971;
1617 and
1718 WHEREAS, Returning stateside, Mr. Hince attended the
1819 Intelligence Officers Basic Course at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, and
1920 then served as executive officer of the Interrogation and Document
2021 Analysis Company of the 519th Intelligence Battalion at Fort Bragg,
2122 North Carolina; he received an honorable discharge in 1973 and
2223 embarked on a successful three-decade career in education, working
2324 as a teacher and administrator; and
2425 WHEREAS, In 1994, Mr. Hince joined the American Legion as a
2526 member of Post 364 in Woodbridge, Virginia; after retiring to Bryan
2627 in 2005, he joined Earl Graham Post 159, where he has served as
2728 chaplain, adjutant, and first vice commander and twice as
2829 commander; from 2012 to 2014, he was 6th District commander, and
2930 from 2014 to 2015, he was 2nd Division commander; he has also served
3031 on the 100th Anniversary, Long Range Planning, Finance and Budget,
3132 Resolution, and National Convention Delegation Committees, and he
3233 has been a member of the Post 159 board of trustees and the Post
3334 Honor Guard; and
3435 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Hince enjoys the active
3536 support of his wife, Gerry, a 31-year army veteran who retired at
3637 the rank of colonel; together, they raised three sons, the late John
3738 Hince Jr., Captain Matthew Hince of the U.S. Air Force Reserve, and
3839 Captain Peter Hince of the U.S. Air Force; both Matthew and Peter
3940 are members of Post 159; and
4041 WHEREAS, For more than two decades, John Hince has played a
4142 prominent role in the American Legion, earning the respect and
4243 admiration of his fellow members for his leadership and dedication,
4344 and he may indeed reflect with pride on his many achievements as he
4445 takes on the challenges and opportunities of his new statewide
4546 position; now, therefore, be it
4647 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4748 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate John Hince on
4849 his election as state commander of the American Legion, Department
4950 of Texas, and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
5051 success in his important work; and, be it further
5152 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5253 prepared for Mr. Hince as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5354 House of Representatives.
