5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, John Hince of Bryan was elected as state commander |

6 | 7 | | of the American Legion for 2017-2018 at the 99th annual convention |

7 | 8 | | of the Legion's Department of Texas, which took place in Killeen on |

8 | 9 | | July 16, 2017; and |

9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, A native of Pennsylvania, John Hince earned a |
---|
10 | 11 | | bachelor's degree as a distinguished military graduate of the |
---|
11 | 12 | | Virginia Military Institute in 1968, and he entered active duty |
---|
12 | 13 | | with the U.S. Army in June 1969; after completing the Infantry |
---|
13 | 14 | | Officers Basic Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, he received further |
---|
14 | 15 | | training at Fort Stewart, Georgia, and Fort Rucker, Alabama; he |
---|
15 | 16 | | served a tour of duty in Vietnam from August 1970 to August 1971; |
---|
16 | 17 | | and |
---|
17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Returning stateside, Mr. Hince attended the |
---|
18 | 19 | | Intelligence Officers Basic Course at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, and |
---|
19 | 20 | | then served as executive officer of the Interrogation and Document |
---|
20 | 21 | | Analysis Company of the 519th Intelligence Battalion at Fort Bragg, |
---|
21 | 22 | | North Carolina; he received an honorable discharge in 1973 and |
---|
22 | 23 | | embarked on a successful three-decade career in education, working |
---|
23 | 24 | | as a teacher and administrator; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, In 1994, Mr. Hince joined the American Legion as a |
---|
25 | 26 | | member of Post 364 in Woodbridge, Virginia; after retiring to Bryan |
---|
26 | 27 | | in 2005, he joined Earl Graham Post 159, where he has served as |
---|
27 | 28 | | chaplain, adjutant, and first vice commander and twice as |
---|
28 | 29 | | commander; from 2012 to 2014, he was 6th District commander, and |
---|
29 | 30 | | from 2014 to 2015, he was 2nd Division commander; he has also served |
---|
30 | 31 | | on the 100th Anniversary, Long Range Planning, Finance and Budget, |
---|
31 | 32 | | Resolution, and National Convention Delegation Committees, and he |
---|
32 | 33 | | has been a member of the Post 159 board of trustees and the Post |
---|
33 | 34 | | Honor Guard; and |
---|
34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Hince enjoys the active |
---|
35 | 36 | | support of his wife, Gerry, a 31-year army veteran who retired at |
---|
36 | 37 | | the rank of colonel; together, they raised three sons, the late John |
---|
37 | 38 | | Hince Jr., Captain Matthew Hince of the U.S. Air Force Reserve, and |
---|
38 | 39 | | Captain Peter Hince of the U.S. Air Force; both Matthew and Peter |
---|
39 | 40 | | are members of Post 159; and |
---|
40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, For more than two decades, John Hince has played a |
---|
41 | 42 | | prominent role in the American Legion, earning the respect and |
---|
42 | 43 | | admiration of his fellow members for his leadership and dedication, |
---|
43 | 44 | | and he may indeed reflect with pride on his many achievements as he |
---|
44 | 45 | | takes on the challenges and opportunities of his new statewide |
---|
45 | 46 | | position; now, therefore, be it |

46 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

47 | 48 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate John Hince on |
---|
48 | 49 | | his election as state commander of the American Legion, Department |
---|
49 | 50 | | of Texas, and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued |
---|
50 | 51 | | success in his important work; and, be it further |
