5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Tom Maynard retired as executive director of the |

6 | 7 | | Texas FFA Association on January 9, 2017, drawing to a close more |
---|
7 | 8 | | than 16 years of outstanding service to that organization; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Maynard became a member of FFA in 1978, when he |
---|
9 | 10 | | was living at Cal Farley's Boys Ranch; he served as state FFA vice |
---|
10 | 11 | | president and as a staff member for the National FFA Organization's |
---|
11 | 12 | | Washington Leadership Conference; after earning a bachelor's |
---|
12 | 13 | | degree in animal production from Texas Tech University in 1986, he |
---|
13 | 14 | | went on to a 13-year career as an agricultural science teacher, |
---|
14 | 15 | | earning national recognition for his innovative programs in |
---|
15 | 16 | | communications; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Maynard became executive director of the Texas |
---|
17 | 18 | | FFA in May 2000, and during his distinguished tenure, he helped |
---|
18 | 19 | | double its membership from 56,000 in 2000 to nearly 116,000 by the |
---|
19 | 20 | | end of 2016; the longest-serving chief executive in the state |
---|
20 | 21 | | association's history, he also updated the organization's |
---|
21 | 22 | | administrative and board structures, stabilized its finances, and |
---|
22 | 23 | | expanded student leadership development and scholarship |
---|
23 | 24 | | opportunities; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, At the national level, Mr. Maynard was part of an |
---|
25 | 26 | | FFA task force that helped remove barriers to participation by |
---|
26 | 27 | | disadvantaged students, and he assisted in creating the current |
---|
27 | 28 | | student delegate process; he has also served as president of the |
---|
28 | 29 | | National Association of Supervisors of Agricultural Education, |
---|
29 | 30 | | which named him outstanding state FFA executive in 2016; and |
---|
30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Maynard currently serves on the State Board of |
---|
31 | 32 | | Education representing District 10; a man of strong religious |
---|
32 | 33 | | faith, he has been a choir director and worship leader at his church |
---|
33 | 34 | | for many years; he and his wife, Freda, also own a real estate |
---|
34 | 35 | | appraisal firm and run a small purebred livestock operation; and |
---|
35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Tom Maynard's broad experience, skilled leadership, |
---|
36 | 37 | | and deep commitment to advancing the mission of FFA have greatly |
---|
37 | 38 | | benefited that organization and the students it serves, and he may |
---|
38 | 39 | | indeed take pride in all he has accomplished at the helm of the |
---|
39 | 40 | | Texas association; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
---|
41 | 42 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Tom Maynard for his |
---|
42 | 43 | | eminent service as executive director of the Texas FFA Association |
---|
43 | 44 | | and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be |
