45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Tom Maynard retired as executive director of the
67 Texas FFA Association on January 9, 2017, drawing to a close more
78 than 16 years of outstanding service to that organization; and
89 WHEREAS, Mr. Maynard became a member of FFA in 1978, when he
910 was living at Cal Farley's Boys Ranch; he served as state FFA vice
1011 president and as a staff member for the National FFA Organization's
1112 Washington Leadership Conference; after earning a bachelor's
1213 degree in animal production from Texas Tech University in 1986, he
1314 went on to a 13-year career as an agricultural science teacher,
1415 earning national recognition for his innovative programs in
1516 communications; and
1617 WHEREAS, Mr. Maynard became executive director of the Texas
1718 FFA in May 2000, and during his distinguished tenure, he helped
1819 double its membership from 56,000 in 2000 to nearly 116,000 by the
1920 end of 2016; the longest-serving chief executive in the state
2021 association's history, he also updated the organization's
2122 administrative and board structures, stabilized its finances, and
2223 expanded student leadership development and scholarship
2324 opportunities; and
2425 WHEREAS, At the national level, Mr. Maynard was part of an
2526 FFA task force that helped remove barriers to participation by
2627 disadvantaged students, and he assisted in creating the current
2728 student delegate process; he has also served as president of the
2829 National Association of Supervisors of Agricultural Education,
2930 which named him outstanding state FFA executive in 2016; and
3031 WHEREAS, Mr. Maynard currently serves on the State Board of
3132 Education representing District 10; a man of strong religious
3233 faith, he has been a choir director and worship leader at his church
3334 for many years; he and his wife, Freda, also own a real estate
3435 appraisal firm and run a small purebred livestock operation; and
3536 WHEREAS, Tom Maynard's broad experience, skilled leadership,
3637 and deep commitment to advancing the mission of FFA have greatly
3738 benefited that organization and the students it serves, and he may
3839 indeed take pride in all he has accomplished at the helm of the
3940 Texas association; now, therefore, be it
4041 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4142 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Tom Maynard for his
4243 eminent service as executive director of the Texas FFA Association
4344 and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be
4445 it further
4546 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4647 prepared for Mr. Maynard as an expression of high regard by the
4748 Texas House of Representatives.
