5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Brownsville Chamber of Commerce is celebrating |

6 | 7 | | its 80th anniversary on August 24, 2017; and |

7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, This vital organization traces its roots back to as |

8 | 9 | | early as 1906, when a number of local residents began working |
---|
9 | 10 | | together to establish a junior college, develop an airport and a |
---|
10 | 11 | | deep-water port, and foster stronger economic ties with Mexico; the |
---|
11 | 12 | | group constructed its first office building in 1927 and earned its |
---|
12 | 13 | | charter as the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce in July 1937; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, the nonprofit has remained |
---|
14 | 15 | | committed to its mission of promoting local economic growth through |
---|
15 | 16 | | advocacy, leadership, and business-building initiatives, and today |
---|
16 | 17 | | it boasts more than 700 business memberships; and |
---|
17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The chamber has additionally benefited the |
---|
18 | 19 | | community by founding numerous events, programs, and institutions, |
---|
19 | 20 | | including Charro Days, the Sombrero Festival, the Mr. Amigo |
---|
20 | 21 | | Association, the Brownsville Convention and Visitors Bureau, |
---|
21 | 22 | | Leadership Brownsville, Brownsville Crime Stoppers, and Healthy |

22 | 23 | | Communities of Brownsville; moreover, its support was instrumental |

23 | 24 | | in the creation of Texas Southmost College, the Port of |
---|
24 | 25 | | Brownsville, the Brownsville South Padre Island International |
---|
25 | 26 | | Airport, and the Brownsville Economic Development Council; and |
---|
26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, In 2016, the chamber was selected by the U.S. Small |

27 | 28 | | Business Administration to host the Women's Business Center of |
---|
28 | 29 | | Cameron County; one of five such organizations in the Lone Star |
---|
29 | 30 | | State, the center is dedicated to enabling and empowering female |
---|
30 | 31 | | entrepreneurs through programs and services focused on advocacy, |
---|
31 | 32 | | education, support, and outreach; and |
---|
32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, The Brownsville Chamber of Commerce has |

33 | 34 | | demonstrated a long-standing commitment to furthering prosperity |

34 | 35 | | in this South Texas community, and its members may indeed reflect |

35 | 36 | | with great pride on the contributions the organization has made |
---|
36 | 37 | | over the past eight decades; now, therefore, be it |

37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

38 | 39 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the 80th |

39 | 40 | | anniversary of the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce and extend to |
