| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Greater Houston chapter of OCA-Asian Pacific |

| 6 | 7 | | American Advocates was named Chapter of the Year at the OCA National |

| 7 | 8 | | Convention in Sacramento, California, on August 5, 2017; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1973 as the Organization of Chinese |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Americans, the renamed OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates seeks |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | to advance the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Pacific Americans in the United States; and |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, OCA-Greater Houston was established in 1979, and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | since then, it has taken part in voter registration drives, |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | supported scholarship programs, hosted nationally known speakers, |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | sponsored performances by dance and theater companies, and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | conducted educational seminars on such topics as workplace rights, |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | affirmative action, and hate crimes; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, The chapter has also helped to establish the Asian |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | American Legal Center of Texas, the Coalition Against Asian |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | American Bashing, and the Asian American Women's Forum, and it has |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | worked closely with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity |

| 22 | 23 | | Commission and the U.S. Department of Labor on educational |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | outreach; in addition, members have supported the OCA Summer |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | Internship program in Washington, D.C., donated books by Asian |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | Pacific authors to college and public libraries, and raised public |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | awareness on issues of importance to Asian Pacific Americans; and |

| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, In addition to being named Chapter of the Year, |

| 28 | 29 | | OCA-Greater Houston also took first place at the national |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | convention in advocacy, first place in programs, and second place |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | in economic development; and |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, For nearly four decades, OCA-Greater Houston has |

| 32 | 33 | | been a champion for Asian Pacific Americans in the Bayou City and |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | beyond, and its efforts are truly deserving of this national honor; |

| 34 | 35 | | now, therefore, be it |

| 35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 36 | 37 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate OCA-Greater |

| 38 | 39 | | its members sincere best wishes for continued success in their |
