5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A life filled with meaningful achievements drew to a |

6 | 7 | | close with the passing of Dan Nip of Houston on July 7, 2017, at the |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Dan Nip was born in Canton, China, on June 24, 1948; |

9 | 10 | | he earned his bachelor's degree and his master's degree in business |

10 | 11 | | administration from Chaminade University of Honolulu, and in 1980, |

11 | 12 | | he settled in Houston; he quickly established himself as a leader in |
---|
12 | 13 | | real estate development and international trade and investment, |
---|
13 | 14 | | becoming the founder and president of Global Century Development |
---|
14 | 15 | | and the president of Product Marketing International; he was |
---|
15 | 16 | | especially well known for playing a key role in the redevelopment of |
---|
16 | 17 | | Houston's Downtown Chinatown during the late 1990s and in the |
---|
17 | 18 | | creation of Rainbow Village, a federally funded housing community |
---|
18 | 19 | | for senior citizens in the Southwest Chinatown area; and |
---|
19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan further benefited Houston |
---|
20 | 21 | | residents through his involvement with a number of civic |
---|
21 | 22 | | organizations; he was a cofounder and former president of the Asian |
---|
22 | 23 | | Chamber of Commerce, founder and president of the Chinatown |
---|
23 | 24 | | Community Development Corporation, and president of the |
---|
24 | 25 | | Houston-Shenzhen Sister City Association; moreover, he served on |
---|
25 | 26 | | the boards of the East Downtown Management District, the Texas |
---|
26 | 27 | | Inter-Faith Housing Corporation, Central Houston, Inc., Blueprint |

27 | 28 | | Houston, and the Buffalo Bayou Partnership; and |
---|
28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Nip enjoyed the love and |

29 | 30 | | support of his wife, Reiko Nip, and his daughters, Elaine and Emily; |

31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Although Dan Nip's death has brought great sorrow to |
---|
32 | 33 | | his loved ones, his remarkable record of business success and civic |
---|
33 | 34 | | engagement in the Houston area will continue to be appreciated for |

34 | 35 | | years to come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

36 | 37 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |

37 | 38 | | of Dan Nip and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and many |

38 | 39 | | friends; and, be it further |
