 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Timothy Summerlin concluded his
 distinguished tenure as president and chancellor of Schreiner
 University on June 1, 2017, and his retirement provides a fitting
 opportunity to reflect on his myriad contributions to the
 university; and
 WHEREAS, Appointed as Schreiner's chief executive officer in
 2001, Tim Summerlin has since ably shepherded the school through a
 period of transformative change; under his leadership, a
 comprehensive campaign was completed, doubling the university's
 endowment and funding the expansion of numerous campus facilities;
 following the success of that effort, Dr. Summerlin initiated a
 second five-year capital campaign that surpassed its goal of $50
 million in May 2017; moreover, enrollment has increased by nearly
 50 percent, and the university now offers baccalaureate degrees in
 political science, nursing and public health, information
 technology, theater, and sports management, along with an online
 MBA program; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Summerlin earned his bachelor's degree in
 English from Abilene Christian College and his master's degree and
 Ph.D. in English from Yale University; before entering
 administration, he taught English at Lamar University, and he went
 on to transfer to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1994
 to serve as an English instructor and dean of the College of Arts
 and Sciences; two years later, he became acting provost and vice
 chancellor for academic affairs at UTC, and he took on that role at
 Schreiner College in 1999; and
 WHEREAS, A respected scholar, Dr. Summerlin has published
 numerous journal articles and critical reviews on topics in
 literature and the humanities, and he has presented professional
 papers at a host of academic conferences; moreover, he has served on
 the boards of the Council of Independent Colleges, the Association
 of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities, and many other
 professional and community organizations; and
 WHEREAS, The students and faculty of Schreiner University
 have been fortunate to benefit from such a passionate and engaged
 leader at their university's helm, and Dr. Tim Summerlin may indeed
 reflect with pride on all that he has achieved; now, therefore, be
 it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Dr. Tim Summerlin on
 his retirement as president and chancellor of Schreiner University
 and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it
 further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Dr. Summerlin as an expression of high regard by the
 Texas House of Representatives.
