5	5	WHEREAS, Wood County lost a beloved resident with the death
6	6	of Samuel Alvin White of Quitman on July 30, 2017, at the age of
7	7	88; and
8	8	WHEREAS, The son of Buena and Oscar White, Sam White was
9	9	born on November 14, 1928, near the Cana and Myrtle Springs
10	10	communities; he grew up with three older sisters, Oleta, Lavelle,
11	11	and Ozella, and attended schools in Wood County; in 1952, he
12	12	joined the United States Army, and he served with the 52nd Field
13	13	Artillery Battalion, 24th Infantry Division, in Japan and Korea;
14	14	he went on to study machining and welding at Tyler Junior
15	15	College, and for three decades, he worked in the oilfield for
16	16	Caska, which later became Farmland Industries; and
17	17	WHEREAS, Mr. White shared a fulfilling marriage of more than
18	18	55 years with his wife, Jimmie Jo White, until her passing in 2010;
19	19	he was the proud father of a son, Shannon, and a daughter, Sheree,
20	20	and he delighted in his four grandsons, Michael, Shawn, Brian, and
21	21	Cody, and his nine great-grandchildren, Brooke, Katelyn, Abbey,
22	22	and Macy Mize, Taylor, Lainey, and Samuel White, and Rylan and
23	23	Rhett Lester, who knew him affectionately as "SamPaw"; he was also
24	24	deeply devoted to his nieces and nephews; and
25	25	WHEREAS, An active member of Myrtle Springs Baptist Church,
26	26	Mr. White expressed his profound faith through countless kind acts;
27	27	he gave generously of his time and financial resources in behalf of
28	28	many worthy causes, and he volunteered his considerable talent as a
29	29	chef at hundreds of fund-raisers for local organizations, including
30	30	the Quitman Volunteer Fire Department, the Masonic Lodge, the
31	31	Alba-Golden Independent School District schools, the Wood County
32	32	Agriculture Show, and various veterans' groups; especially known
33	33	for his stew, he cooked a batch for every Hainesville Volunteer Fire
34	34	Department benefit for 36 years, beginning with the inaugural event,
35	35	and was designated as the group's honorary fire chief; he once
36	36	prepared a 135-gallon stew for 800 people who arrived via wagon
37	37	train in celebration of the Texas sesquicentennial; in his free
38	38	time, he enjoyed gardening and watching old Westerns; he had a great
39	39	store of knowledge about history, a wonderful sense of humor, and a
40	40	gift for storytelling; and
41	41	WHEREAS, Sam White is deeply missed by all who were
42	42	privileged to share in the richness of his life, and his
43	43	contributions to his community will be remembered and admired for
44	44	years to come; now, therefore, be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
46	46	Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
47	47	of Sam White and extend sincere sympathy to his loved ones; and,
48	48	be it further
49	49	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
50	50	his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do
51	51	so in memory of Samuel Alvin White.
