55 WHEREAS, Wood County lost a beloved resident with the death
66 of Samuel Alvin White of Quitman on July 30, 2017, at the age of
77 88; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Buena and Oscar White, Sam White was
99 born on November 14, 1928, near the Cana and Myrtle Springs
1010 communities; he grew up with three older sisters, Oleta, Lavelle,
1111 and Ozella, and attended schools in Wood County; in 1952, he
1212 joined the United States Army, and he served with the 52nd Field
1313 Artillery Battalion, 24th Infantry Division, in Japan and Korea;
1414 he went on to study machining and welding at Tyler Junior
1515 College, and for three decades, he worked in the oilfield for
1616 Caska, which later became Farmland Industries; and
1717 WHEREAS, Mr. White shared a fulfilling marriage of more than
1818 55 years with his wife, Jimmie Jo White, until her passing in 2010;
1919 he was the proud father of a son, Shannon, and a daughter, Sheree,
2020 and he delighted in his four grandsons, Michael, Shawn, Brian, and
2121 Cody, and his nine great-grandchildren, Brooke, Katelyn, Abbey,
2222 and Macy Mize, Taylor, Lainey, and Samuel White, and Rylan and
2323 Rhett Lester, who knew him affectionately as "SamPaw"; he was also
2424 deeply devoted to his nieces and nephews; and
2525 WHEREAS, An active member of Myrtle Springs Baptist Church,
2626 Mr. White expressed his profound faith through countless kind acts;
2727 he gave generously of his time and financial resources in behalf of
2828 many worthy causes, and he volunteered his considerable talent as a
2929 chef at hundreds of fund-raisers for local organizations, including
3030 the Quitman Volunteer Fire Department, the Masonic Lodge, the
3131 Alba-Golden Independent School District schools, the Wood County
3232 Agriculture Show, and various veterans' groups; especially known
3333 for his stew, he cooked a batch for every Hainesville Volunteer Fire
3434 Department benefit for 36 years, beginning with the inaugural event,
3535 and was designated as the group's honorary fire chief; he once
3636 prepared a 135-gallon stew for 800 people who arrived via wagon
3737 train in celebration of the Texas sesquicentennial; in his free
3838 time, he enjoyed gardening and watching old Westerns; he had a great
3939 store of knowledge about history, a wonderful sense of humor, and a
4040 gift for storytelling; and
4141 WHEREAS, Sam White is deeply missed by all who were
4242 privileged to share in the richness of his life, and his
4343 contributions to his community will be remembered and admired for
4444 years to come; now, therefore, be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4646 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
4747 of Sam White and extend sincere sympathy to his loved ones; and,
4848 be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5050 his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do
5151 so in memory of Samuel Alvin White.
