44 Don Edward Baylor
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Don Edward Baylor, who died August 7,
77 2017, at the age of 68; and
88 WHEREAS, Don Baylor was born June 28, 1949, in Austin, in
99 the Clarksville neighborhood, an African American community
1010 surrounded by wealthy neighborhoods; despite originally being
1111 turned away from football tryouts at Stephen F. Austin High
1212 School, he persisted and made the team, and he was named
1313 honorable mention all-state his senior year; he was the first
1414 African American to play on the school's baseball team and became
1515 its captain his senior year; and
1616 WHEREAS, He was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the
1717 1967 amateur draft and was an immediate success, winning
1818 Appalachian League player-of-the-year honors; he was later named
1919 to the Texas League all-star team, and in 1970, he was named the
2020 Minor League Player of the Year by the Sporting News; and
2121 WHEREAS, He began his distinguished 19-year major league
2222 career in 1972 with the Baltimore Orioles, and he earned Topps
2323 Rookie Major League All-Star honors, he went on to play for the
2424 Oakland Athletics, the California Angels, the New York Yankees,
2525 the Boston Red Sox, and the Minnesota Twins; and
2626 WHEREAS, A member of baseball's first class of free agents,
2727 Mr. Baylor was widely respected and admired as an exceptional
2828 clubhouse leader; he earned numerous honors and accolades over
2929 the course of his career, including the 1979 American League Most
3030 Valuable Player award and the 1985 Roberto Clemente Award,
3131 presented annually to a player of exceptional character who
3232 contributes greatly to his community; and
3333 WHEREAS, After his playing career was over, Mr. Baylor
3434 coached and managed a number of teams; he was the first manager of
3535 the expansion Colorado Rockies, and in 1995, he was named
3636 National League Manager of the Year when the Rockies became the
3737 fastest expansion team to make the playoffs; and
3838 WHEREAS, He and his beloved wife, Rebecca Baylor, were
3939 blessed with a son, Don Baylor Jr., who was a source of much pride
4040 and joy for him; and
4141 WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he
4242 gave generously to others as a role model and mentor, and his
4343 leadership skills, his impressive work ethic, and his enthusiasm
4444 for living each day to the fullest will not be forgotten; and
4545 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband and father, and he leaves
4646 behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and
4747 countless friends; now, therefore, be it
4848 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4949 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
5050 condolences to the bereaved family of Don Edward Baylor; and, be
5151 it further
5252 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5353 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
5454 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5555 memory of Don Edward Baylor.
