55 WHEREAS, Memories of joyful times and meaningful
66 accomplishments remain to comfort the family and friends of James
77 Edward Garner of Daingerfield, who passed away on May 27, 2017,
88 at the age of 83; and
99 WHEREAS, The son of F. J. Garner and Gordie Opal Garner,
1010 Jim Garner was born in Texarkana, Arkansas, on April 17, 1934;
1111 after graduating from Arkansas High School, he worked as a
1212 firefighter while attending North Texas State University; he
1313 went on to answer his nation's call to duty as a member of the
1414 United States Air Force, and he attained the rank of captain
1515 before returning to civilian life; for nearly four decades, he
1616 enjoyed a successful career as a personnel director in the human
1717 resources departments at Lone Star Steel and T&N Railroad; and
1818 WHEREAS, Active in his community, Mr. Garner was a
1919 longtime member of the Daingerfield High School athletic booster
2020 club and a valued congregant of the First Baptist Church of
2121 Daingerfield, where he volunteered as a deacon for more than half
2222 a century; he also remained dedicated to his fellow veterans,
2323 serving as a member of the honor guard of American Legion Post
2424 No. 351 and as the veterans service officer of Morris County; in
2525 his leisure hours, he loved spending time in the great outdoors,
2626 especially hunting and fishing; and
2727 WHEREAS, Mr. Garner was the devoted husband of Jean Daniel
2828 Garner, with whom he shared six rewarding decades of marriage; over
2929 the years, the couple were blessed with two children, Suzanne
3030 Carpenter and her husband, Dane, and Lee Austin Garner and his
3131 wife, Marion, and they eventually knew the joy of welcoming into
3232 their family four grandchildren, Cody Carpenter and his wife,
3333 Megan, Nikki Carpenter, and Christina and Kimberly Garner, as well
3434 as a great-granddaughter, Sadie Lynn Carpenter; and
3535 WHEREAS, Jim Garner lived a rich and purposeful life
3636 dedicated to his family, his faith, and his country, and he
3737 leaves behind a record of service that his loved ones can
3838 remember with pride; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4040 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
4141 of James Edward Garner and extend heartfelt sympathy to his
4242 relatives and friends; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4444 his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do
4545 so in memory of Jim Garner.
