55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of General Robert Morin Shoemaker, who died
77 June 21, 2017, at the age of 93; and
88 WHEREAS, Robert Shoemaker was born on February 18, 1924; he
99 grew up on a farm in rural Michigan, and he graduated with a class
1010 of 23 students at Almont High School in 1941; he joined the United
1111 States Army upon his acceptance to West Point Military Academy,
1212 and he graduated in 1946; and
1313 WHEREAS, In 1965, General Shoemaker was deployed with the
1414 1st Cavalry Division to Vietnam, where he commanded the 1st
1515 Battalion, 12th Cavalry and the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry; he was
1616 later promoted to brigadier general, and in May of 1970, he led
1717 Task Force Shoemaker on the initial United States incursion into
1818 Cambodia; he went on to become the commander of III Corps and Fort
1919 Hood, and in 1977, he was assigned to the position of deputy
2020 commander of United States Army Forces Command in Fort McPherson,
2121 Georgia; after a year of service he was promoted to commander, a
2222 four-star position that only a select few army officers achieve,
2323 and in this role, he supervised approximately one million active,
2424 reserve, and national guard soldiers; and
2525 WHEREAS, After his 1982 retirement from the military,
2626 General Shoemaker became an active community leader; he served
2727 for eight years as an elected county commissioner in Bell County,
2828 and he volunteered for numerous charitable causes and was a
2929 well-known supporter of United Way; he was honored with both
3030 the Frank W. Mayborn Humanitarian Award and the Roy J. Smith
3131 Award for community service, and in 2000, the Killeen Independent
3232 School District named the Robert M. Shoemaker High School in his
3333 honor; and
3434 WHEREAS, General Shoemaker shared nearly 70 years of
3535 marriage with his devoted wife, Mary "Tuke" Shoemaker; he was a
3636 highly respected member of his community who was admired for his
3737 strength, his courage, and his commitment to serving his fellow
3838 citizens; he will long be remembered with great admiration by all
3939 who were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4141 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences
4242 to the bereaved family of General Robert Morin Shoemaker; and, be
4343 it further
4444 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his
4545 family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate
4646 and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
4747 Robert Shoemaker.
