5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
---|
6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of General Robert Morin Shoemaker, who died |
---|
7 | 7 | | June 21, 2017, at the age of 93; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Robert Shoemaker was born on February 18, 1924; he |
---|
9 | 9 | | grew up on a farm in rural Michigan, and he graduated with a class |
---|
10 | 10 | | of 23 students at Almont High School in 1941; he joined the United |
---|
11 | 11 | | States Army upon his acceptance to West Point Military Academy, |
---|
12 | 12 | | and he graduated in 1946; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, In 1965, General Shoemaker was deployed with the |
---|
14 | 14 | | 1st Cavalry Division to Vietnam, where he commanded the 1st |
---|
15 | 15 | | Battalion, 12th Cavalry and the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry; he was |
---|
16 | 16 | | later promoted to brigadier general, and in May of 1970, he led |
---|
17 | 17 | | Task Force Shoemaker on the initial United States incursion into |
---|
18 | 18 | | Cambodia; he went on to become the commander of III Corps and Fort |
---|
19 | 19 | | Hood, and in 1977, he was assigned to the position of deputy |
---|
20 | 20 | | commander of United States Army Forces Command in Fort McPherson, |
---|
21 | 21 | | Georgia; after a year of service he was promoted to commander, a |
---|
22 | 22 | | four-star position that only a select few army officers achieve, |
---|
23 | 23 | | and in this role, he supervised approximately one million active, |
---|
24 | 24 | | reserve, and national guard soldiers; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, After his 1982 retirement from the military, |
---|
26 | 26 | | General Shoemaker became an active community leader; he served |
---|
27 | 27 | | for eight years as an elected county commissioner in Bell County, |
---|
28 | 28 | | and he volunteered for numerous charitable causes and was a |
---|
29 | 29 | | well-known supporter of United Way; he was honored with both |
---|
30 | 30 | | the Frank W. Mayborn Humanitarian Award and the Roy J. Smith |
---|
31 | 31 | | Award for community service, and in 2000, the Killeen Independent |
---|
32 | 32 | | School District named the Robert M. Shoemaker High School in his |
---|
33 | 33 | | honor; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, General Shoemaker shared nearly 70 years of |
---|
35 | 35 | | marriage with his devoted wife, Mary "Tuke" Shoemaker; he was a |
---|
36 | 36 | | highly respected member of his community who was admired for his |
---|
37 | 37 | | strength, his courage, and his commitment to serving his fellow |
---|
38 | 38 | | citizens; he will long be remembered with great admiration by all |
---|
39 | 39 | | who were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences |
---|
42 | 42 | | to the bereaved family of General Robert Morin Shoemaker; and, be |
---|
43 | 43 | | it further |
---|
44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his |
---|
45 | 45 | | family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate |
---|
46 | 46 | | and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of |
