55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Karl Putnam, who died July 12, 2017, at
77 the age of 69; and
88 WHEREAS, Karl Putnam was born December 19, 1947, in Durham,
99 North Carolina; he grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast and earned
1010 undergraduate and graduate accounting degrees at The University
1111 of Texas at Austin before receiving a doctorate at Oklahoma State
1212 University; and
1313 WHEREAS, Dr. Putnam was an associate professor in the
1414 Accounting and Information Systems Department at The University
1515 of Texas at El Paso; he was widely published in academic and
1616 professional journals and contributed numerous questions for
1717 professional accounting certification examinations; and
1818 WHEREAS, Dr. Putnam was respected and admired by his
1919 students as well as his colleagues, and he served as chair of the
2020 dissertation committee for the university's first doctoral
2121 graduate in accounting; he was active in a number of professional
2222 organizations, including the American Accounting Association and
2323 the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants; and
2424 WHEREAS, He was known across the region for his love of the
2525 outdoors and his commitment to environmental protection; he
2626 treasured the beauty and diversity of the Franklin Mountains and
2727 led countless hikers on group hikes to share the natural wonders
2828 and historic sites to be found there; he was an organizer of the
2929 El Paso Hiking Group and the Sunrise Hikers; and
3030 WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he gave
3131 unselfishly to others, and his generous spirit and enthusiasm for
3232 living each day to the fullest will not be forgotten by those who
3333 were privileged to share in his life; and
3434 WHEREAS, He was devoted to his large and loving extended
3535 family, and he leaves behind memories that will long be cherished
3636 by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3838 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences
3939 to the bereaved family and friends of Karl Putnam; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4141 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4242 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4343 memory of Karl Putnam.
