| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Karl Putnam, who died July 12, 2017, at |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | the age of 69; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Karl Putnam was born December 19, 1947, in Durham, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | North Carolina; he grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast and earned |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | undergraduate and graduate accounting degrees at The University |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | of Texas at Austin before receiving a doctorate at Oklahoma State |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | University; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Putnam was an associate professor in the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Accounting and Information Systems Department at The University |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | of Texas at El Paso; he was widely published in academic and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | professional journals and contributed numerous questions for |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | professional accounting certification examinations; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Putnam was respected and admired by his |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | students as well as his colleagues, and he served as chair of the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | dissertation committee for the university's first doctoral |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | graduate in accounting; he was active in a number of professional |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | organizations, including the American Accounting Association and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, He was known across the region for his love of the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | outdoors and his commitment to environmental protection; he |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | treasured the beauty and diversity of the Franklin Mountains and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | led countless hikers on group hikes to share the natural wonders |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | and historic sites to be found there; he was an organizer of the |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | El Paso Hiking Group and the Sunrise Hikers; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he gave |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | unselfishly to others, and his generous spirit and enthusiasm for |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | living each day to the fullest will not be forgotten by those who |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | were privileged to share in his life; and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, He was devoted to his large and loving extended |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | family, and he leaves behind memories that will long be cherished |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | to the bereaved family and friends of Karl Putnam; and, be it further |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | memory of Karl Putnam. |
