2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize International Business Machines Corporation on the |
---|
4 | 4 | | occasion of the company's 50th anniversary in Austin; and |
---|
5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, On July 31, 1967, IBM opened the doors of its new |
---|
6 | 6 | | 100,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in North Austin, and 500 |
---|
7 | 7 | | employees played a role in assembling the Selectric Composer |
---|
8 | 8 | | typewriter; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The company's operations have evolved over the |
---|
10 | 10 | | years as IBM has worked to meet the changing demands of society, |
---|
11 | 11 | | and today, the Austin campus provides jobs for approximately |
---|
12 | 12 | | 6,000 Central Texans; the site hosts one of IBM's 12 research |
---|
13 | 13 | | laboratories, and it serves as headquarters for the company's |
---|
14 | 14 | | Global Design Group; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, IBM has reached many significant technological |
---|
16 | 16 | | milestones in the capital city; in 1984, Austin workers helped |
---|
17 | 17 | | develop the company's first portable personal computer, and two |
---|
18 | 18 | | years later, the Austin site began manufacturing the PC |
---|
19 | 19 | | Convertible, IBM's first foldable laptop; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Over the last five decades, IBM has contributed |
---|
21 | 21 | | greatly to the local economy through job creation, acquisitions, |
---|
22 | 22 | | and the philanthropic endeavors of its employees; it has also |
---|
23 | 23 | | helped bring about new entrepreneurial activity, as former |
---|
24 | 24 | | employees have moved on to begin new local technology businesses |
---|
25 | 25 | | such as Cognitive Scale and ClearCube; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, IBM played a significant role in Austin's development |
---|
27 | 27 | | from a sleepy college town to one of the nation's renowned |
---|
28 | 28 | | technological centers; the company continues to thrive as an |
---|
29 | 29 | | innovator in technological research and development, and its |
---|
30 | 30 | | 50-year anniversary in the Texas capital is indeed worthy of |
---|
31 | 31 | | celebration; now, therefore, be it |
---|
32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
33 | 33 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate International |
---|
34 | 34 | | Business Machines Corporation on 50 years of success in Austin |
---|
35 | 35 | | and extend to all associated with the company best wishes for the |
---|
36 | 36 | | future; and, be it further |

37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

38 | 38 | | the company as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
