| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed Texan is indeed |

| 3 | 3 | | cause for celebration, and Virginia Elizabeth Toole Reed of Paris |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | marked this momentous milestone in the company of family and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | friends on May 21, 2017; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Born in Lovington, New Mexico, in 1917, the former |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Virginia Toole moved to the Lone Star State as a child; she |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | graduated from Texas Technological College and began her career |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | teaching English literature; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, She married Barrett "Buster" Reed, and they |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | became the parents of two daughters; while raising her children |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | in Lamesa, Mrs. Reed was active in many community activities, and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | she both volunteered and worked for two Girl Scout councils; she |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | eventually resumed her career in education in Pecos, where she |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | taught English to classes composed primarily of Spanish-speaking |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | students; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Following her retirement in 1982, Mrs. Reed |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | settled in Paris and worked as a registered educational |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | diagnostician and professional counselor; she also gave |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | generously of her time and talents to numerous organizations, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | among them the McCuistion Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Paris Community Theatre, and Friends of the Paris Public Library; |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | uniting with other volunteers, she helped found the city's |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | chapter of Habitat for Humanity, and she was a member of the Paris |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Noon Study Club, the Lamar-Delta Retired Teachers and School |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Employees Association, the Girl Scout Council of Red River |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Valley, and Delta Kappa Gamma; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Virginia Reed is a source of tremendous |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | inspiration, and in sharing the experience gained through a |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | century of life well lived, she bestows a precious gift of wisdom |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | that benefits all who are fortunate enough to know her; now, |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Virginia |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Elizabeth Toole Reed on her 100th birthday and extend to her |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further |

| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

| 38 | 38 | | Mrs. Reed as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. |
