11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 15
22 WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed Texan is indeed
33 cause for celebration, and Virginia Elizabeth Toole Reed of Paris
44 marked this momentous milestone in the company of family and
55 friends on May 21, 2017; and
66 WHEREAS, Born in Lovington, New Mexico, in 1917, the former
77 Virginia Toole moved to the Lone Star State as a child; she
88 graduated from Texas Technological College and began her career
99 teaching English literature; and
1010 WHEREAS, She married Barrett "Buster" Reed, and they
1111 became the parents of two daughters; while raising her children
1212 in Lamesa, Mrs. Reed was active in many community activities, and
1313 she both volunteered and worked for two Girl Scout councils; she
1414 eventually resumed her career in education in Pecos, where she
1515 taught English to classes composed primarily of Spanish-speaking
1616 students; and
1717 WHEREAS, Following her retirement in 1982, Mrs. Reed
1818 settled in Paris and worked as a registered educational
1919 diagnostician and professional counselor; she also gave
2020 generously of her time and talents to numerous organizations,
2121 among them the McCuistion Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, the
2222 Paris Community Theatre, and Friends of the Paris Public Library;
2323 uniting with other volunteers, she helped found the city's
2424 chapter of Habitat for Humanity, and she was a member of the Paris
2525 Noon Study Club, the Lamar-Delta Retired Teachers and School
2626 Employees Association, the Girl Scout Council of Red River
2727 Valley, and Delta Kappa Gamma; and
2828 WHEREAS, Virginia Reed is a source of tremendous
2929 inspiration, and in sharing the experience gained through a
3030 century of life well lived, she bestows a precious gift of wisdom
3131 that benefits all who are fortunate enough to know her; now,
3232 therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3434 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Virginia
3535 Elizabeth Toole Reed on her 100th birthday and extend to her
3636 sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3838 Mrs. Reed as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
