2	2	WHEREAS, Proud members of the Republican Party of Texas are
3	3	celebrating the organization's 150th anniversary in 2017; and
4	4	WHEREAS, The Republican Party of Texas was founded at the
5	5	Harris County Courthouse on the Fourth of July, 1867, 13 years
6	6	after the national party was established and 7 years after the
7	7	election of the first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln;
8	8	former governor Elisha M. Pease served as chair of that initial
9	9	state convention, and Colonel John L. Haynes, commander of the
10	10	United States Army's First Texas Cavalry, became the executive
11	11	committee chair; the party's membership in its early years was
12	12	largely made up of former slaves, German American immigrants, and
13	13	Texans who had opposed secession during the Civil War; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Notable early Texas Republicans included Edmund
15	15	J. Davis, the state's first Republican governor, Morgan C. Hamilton,
16	16	a Republican senator, George T. Ruby, an African American state
17	17	senator from Galveston, and Norris Wright Cuney, a prominent
18	18	African American leader and a member of the Republican National
19	19	Committee from 1886 to 1896; and
20	20	WHEREAS, The party gained strength in the Lone Star State
21	21	in the 20th century when Dwight Eisenhower carried Texas in the
22	22	1952 presidential election, and its fortunes were boosted again
23	23	in 1961 when John Tower was elected to replace Lyndon Johnson in
24	24	the United States Senate; a new era began in 1978, when William P.
25	25	Clements took office as the first Republican governor since
26	26	Reconstruction, and from the 1980s to the present, Texas has been
27	27	represented in the United States Congress by a series of
28	28	accomplished Republican leaders, including Senators Phil Gramm,
29	29	Kay Bailey Hutchison, John Cornyn, and Ted Cruz, as well as
30	30	numerous members of the United States House of Representatives;
31	31	Republicans have taken on an increasingly prominent role in state
32	32	and local government as well; the party has held the governor's
33	33	office since 1994, with George W. Bush, Rick Perry, and Greg
34	34	Abbott serving as chief executive, and Republicans have swept the
35	35	other statewide offices in five consecutive elections and have
36	36	held a majority in the Texas Senate since 1997 and in the Texas
37	37	House of Representatives since 2003; and
38	38	WHEREAS, Thanks to the tireless service and exemplary
39	39	leadership of countless men and women, the Republican Party
40	40	continues to carry forth its core goals, including limited
41	41	government, political and economic freedom, and strong national
42	42	security, and its members may indeed take great pride in their
43	43	invaluable contributions to our state and nation; now,
44	44	therefore, be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
46	46	Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the
47	47	sesquicentennial of the Republican Party of Texas; and, be it
48	48	further
49	49	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
50	50	the Republican Party of Texas as an expression of high regard
51	51	from the Texas Senate.
