                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 29
 In Memory
 of
 Moises Vicente Vela Sr.
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 citizens of Harlingen in mourning the loss of Moises Vicente Vela
 Sr., an esteemed public servant, who died June 11, 2017, at the
 age of 87; and
 WHEREAS, Born in Harlingen, Moises Vela served with
 distinction in the United States Army during the Korean War; he
 earned a degree from Saint Mary's University School of Law in
 San Antonio, and he returned to his hometown to begin his law
 career; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Vela served the community in professional
 capacities for more than 50 years; his successful law practice
 specialized in criminal defense, family law, personal injury
 cases, and real estate law, and he brought his broad-ranging
 expertise to the bench in his service as a municipal court judge;
 he was one of the first Hispanic citizens to serve as a Cameron
 County judge and a trailblazing civic leader; in 2005, Moises V.
 Vela Middle School opened and was named in his honor as a tribute
 to his exemplary public service; and
 WHEREAS, Moises shared more than 60 years of marriage with
 Mary Jo Vela, and they guided their five children by loving
 example; he was a beloved patriarch who found immense joy in his
 role as "Pipo" to his many adoring grandchildren and
 great-grandchildren; and
 WHEREAS, Moises Vela was a man of great faith and wisdom,
 and he served as a mentor and advisor to countless individuals of
 all ages; he was respected and admired throughout the Rio Grande
 Valley for his kindness, his boundless generosity, and his
 uncompromising integrity, and he leaves behind memories that
 will long be cherished by all who were privileged to share in his
 life; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
 condolences to the bereaved family of Moises Vicente Vela Sr.;
 and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
 memory of Moises Vela.
