SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 30 In Memory of Emily Irene Hamrick Harding WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Brownsville in mourning the loss of Emily Irene Hamrick Harding, who died June 3, 2017, at the age of 93; and WHEREAS, Irene Hamrick was born on October 2, 1923, in Ashford, Alabama; she learned the importance of hard work growing up on her parents' 300-acre farm during the difficult years of the Great Depression; and WHEREAS, Irene met Jack Clayton Harding when he was on leave from his posting in the United States Navy, and they married in the spring of 1945; they lived in Jack's home state of Illinois for several years, and they moved to Brownsville in 1961, when Jack accepted the position of general manager of the shrimp division of Booth Fisheries; and WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Harding shared 39 years of marriage; they were blessed with three children, and their four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren were a source of immense pride and joy; and WHEREAS, An active member of her community, Mrs. Harding was an ardent supporter of the Gladys Porter Zoo and a member of the Cameron County Republican Women organization; she was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan who was thrilled to see her team win the 2016 World Series; her stunning bluebonnet garden was twice highlighted in the Brownsville Herald and earned her the title of "The Bluebonnet Queen"; she was beloved by many, and she leaves behind memories that will long be cherished by all who were privileged to share in her life; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Emily Irene Hamrick Harding; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Irene Harding.
