44 Robert A. Torres Sr.
55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Robert A. Torres Sr., a beloved member
77 of the Brownsville community, who died November 29, 2015, at the
88 age of 81; and
99 WHEREAS, Bob Torres was born in Brownsville on
1010 July 25, 1934; he was a 1952 honors graduate of Brownsville High
1111 School, and he furthered his studies at Texas Southmost College
1212 in Brownsville and at Southwest Texas State University, where he
1313 majored in speech and was on the debate team; and
1414 WHEREAS, Mr. Torres had a successful career in real estate
1515 that spanned 30 years, and he was a professor at the American
1616 College of Real Estate for four years; in 1986, he cofounded the
1717 G. M. S. Waste Disposal Company, which continues to provide
1818 services to the City of Brownsville; and
1919 WHEREAS, Mr. Torres dedicated much of his life to
2020 fostering international understanding between Mexico and the
2121 United States, and he demonstrated his love of Mexican culture as
2222 a founding member of the Mr. Amigo Association; in 1971, he
2323 became the first Mexican American president of the association,
2424 and over the years, he was involved in the selection of more than
2525 30 Mr. Amigos; he played an integral role in coordinating and
2626 establishing live television coverage of Charro Days, Mr. Amigo,
2727 and Fiestas Mexicanas events to audiences in 20 countries; and
2828 WHEREAS, Bob Torres shared 58 years of marriage with Rachel
2929 G. Torres, and they were blessed with two children and three
3030 grandchildren; Mrs. Torres shared her husband's love of their
3131 familial culture and heritage, and they worked together in
3232 numerous capacities to foster support for the Matamoros and
3333 Brownsville communities; they were both honored with Ohtli
3434 Awards, the highest honor bestowed by the Mexican government to a
3535 non-Mexican citizen, and they were named the 2015 Grand Marshals
3636 of the Charro Days Parade; and
3737 WHEREAS, Mr. Torres was a man of deep spiritual devotion who
3838 held leadership positions at Saint Mary's, Saint Luke's, and Sacred
3939 Heart Churches; he was honored on numerous occasions for his
4040 extraordinary contributions to the Rio Grande Valley, and his
4141 multicultural legacy will continue to inspire people on both sides
4242 of the border for generations to come; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4444 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
4545 condolences to the bereaved family of Robert A. Torres Sr.; and,
4646 be it further
4747 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4848 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4949 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
5050 memory of Robert Torres.
