4	4	Robert A. Torres Sr.
5	5	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
6	6	commemorates the life of Robert A. Torres Sr., a beloved member
7	7	of the Brownsville community, who died November 29, 2015, at the
8	8	age of 81; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Bob Torres was born in Brownsville on
10	10	July 25, 1934; he was a 1952 honors graduate of Brownsville High
11	11	School, and he furthered his studies at Texas Southmost College
12	12	in Brownsville and at Southwest Texas State University, where he
13	13	majored in speech and was on the debate team; and
14	14	WHEREAS, Mr. Torres had a successful career in real estate
15	15	that spanned 30 years, and he was a professor at the American
16	16	College of Real Estate for four years; in 1986, he cofounded the
17	17	G. M. S. Waste Disposal Company, which continues to provide
18	18	services to the City of Brownsville; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Mr. Torres dedicated much of his life to
20	20	fostering international understanding between Mexico and the
21	21	United States, and he demonstrated his love of Mexican culture as
22	22	a founding member of the Mr. Amigo Association; in 1971, he
23	23	became the first Mexican American president of the association,
24	24	and over the years, he was involved in the selection of more than
25	25	30 Mr. Amigos; he played an integral role in coordinating and
26	26	establishing live television coverage of Charro Days, Mr. Amigo,
27	27	and Fiestas Mexicanas events to audiences in 20 countries; and
28	28	WHEREAS, Bob Torres shared 58 years of marriage with Rachel
29	29	G. Torres, and they were blessed with two children and three
30	30	grandchildren; Mrs. Torres shared her husband's love of their
31	31	familial culture and heritage, and they worked together in
32	32	numerous capacities to foster support for the Matamoros and
33	33	Brownsville communities; they were both honored with Ohtli
34	34	Awards, the highest honor bestowed by the Mexican government to a
35	35	non-Mexican citizen, and they were named the 2015 Grand Marshals
36	36	of the Charro Days Parade; and
37	37	WHEREAS, Mr. Torres was a man of deep spiritual devotion who
38	38	held leadership positions at Saint Mary's, Saint Luke's, and Sacred
39	39	Heart Churches; he was honored on numerous occasions for his
40	40	extraordinary contributions to the Rio Grande Valley, and his
41	41	multicultural legacy will continue to inspire people on both sides
42	42	of the border for generations to come; now, therefore, be it
43	43	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
44	44	Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
45	45	condolences to the bereaved family of Robert A. Torres Sr.; and,
46	46	be it further
47	47	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
48	48	his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
49	49	Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
50	50	memory of Robert Torres.
