SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 33 In Memory of Ray Ramón WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and commemorates the life of Ray Ramón, who died May 25, 2017, at the age of 79; and WHEREAS, Ray Ramón was born on January 16, 1938, in Rio Grande City, to José and Natividad Ramón; he graduated from Weslaco High School in 1957, and in 1961, he earned a degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.; he went on to serve in the office of Congressman Joe Kilgore; and WHEREAS, He returned to the Rio Grande Valley in 1966 as head of the Cameron County Community Projects, a federal antipoverty program; in 1971, he became Cameron County's youngest and first Latino county judge; and WHEREAS, Over the course of his distinguished career, Mr. Ramón was a champion for the poor and disadvantaged people of the county; he also played an important role in the incorporation of South Padre Island, and he was instrumental in the completion of the Queen Isabella Causeway and the construction of the Los Indios Free Trade Bridge; and WHEREAS, He was a man of courage and determination who was noted for his humor and charisma; he loved the Rio Grande Valley and its people, and his skill as a storyteller, his passion for the outdoors, and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to share in his life; and WHEREAS, He was a loving father and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by his family and his many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Ray Ramón; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ray Ramón.
