55 WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their
66 memories of James W. Vaughan of Clarksville, who died on May 29,
77 2017, at the age of 95; and
88 WHEREAS, "Buddy" Vaughan was born in Clarksville on
99 October 15, 1921, to Mack and Areetta Hart Vaughan; he graduated
1010 from Clarksville High School in 1938 and attended Paris Junior
1111 College, where he was student council president and participated
1212 in track and tennis; he also discovered a lifelong passion for
1313 flying at Paris Junior College and went on to take advanced
1414 flight instruction at Love Field in Dallas; and
1515 WHEREAS, During World War II, Mr. Vaughan served in the
1616 United States Navy as a combat pilot aboard the aircraft carrier
1717 USS Shangri-La; after the war, he flew with the Naval Reserve
1818 while attending North Texas State University and The University
1919 of Texas at Austin; he returned to active duty during the Korean
2020 War, testing air-to-air missiles as a jet pilot; and
2121 WHEREAS, Leaving the navy at the rank of lieutenant
2222 commander, Mr. Vaughan returned to Clarksville, where he owned an
2323 insurance agency and then served as manager of the Clarksville
2424 Chamber of Commerce, as personnel director of the Baker and
2525 Taylor Company, and as personnel director and company pilot for
2626 Piggly Wiggly; he worked as a personnel consultant until his
2727 retirement in 1998; and
2828 WHEREAS, Mr. Vaughan was president of the local Rotary Club
2929 and chamber of commerce, secretary of the Red River County
3030 Industrial Foundation, and a member of the Agricultural
3131 Improvement Association; he played a leading role in the
3232 development of the industrial park, the county airport, and the
3333 Langford Lake project; he was a member of the American Legion,
3434 the VFW, and the McKenzie Memorial United Methodist Church; in
3535 1985, he received the George F. Sunkel Award for his outstanding
3636 community service; and
3737 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Vaughan enjoyed the love
3838 and support of his wife, the former Joan Sims, with whom he shared
3939 six decades of marriage; they were the proud parents of two
4040 children, James Vaughan Jr. and Clare Vaughan Rainey, and over
4141 the years, Mr. Vaughan had the pleasure of welcoming two
4242 grandchildren, Chris and Jennifer, and four great-grandchildren,
4343 Madison, Cason, Cash, and Channing, into his family; and
4444 WHEREAS, A dedicated community leader and proud military
4545 veteran, Buddy Vaughan lived a rich and purposeful life, and he
4646 will forever be a source of inspiration to those he leaves behind;
4747 now, therefore, be it
4848 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4949 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
5050 of James W. Vaughan and extend condolences to his loved ones;
5151 and, be it further
5252 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5353 his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do
5454 so in memory of Buddy Vaughan.
