| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | citizens of Seguin in mourning the loss of Ruben "Rocky" |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Contreras, who died July 6, 2017, at the age of 80; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Rocky Contreras was born on October 25, 1936, in |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | San Marcos, where he became a standout Golden Gloves boxer; he |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | went on to serve the nation with distinction as a member of the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | United States Marine Corps; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, After his military service, he moved to Seguin, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | where he was a successful businessman and public servant; he was |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the owner of Rocky's Drive In Grocery Store and the Barber Shop |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | next door, and he represented District I on the Seguin City |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Council for 26 years; as a councilmember, he was instrumental in |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | bringing numerous infrastructure improvements to the city; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Contreras also established the Seguin Boxing |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Club, where he trained young boxers, and he was an active member |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 61; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, He and his beloved wife of 54 years, Kathy |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Contreras, were blessed with a son, Carl, and four grandchildren, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Carlos, Elan, Kierdis, and Chaylyne; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | gave generously to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | counsel will not be forgotten; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | and he leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by his |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | to the bereaved family of Ruben Contreras; and, be it further |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
