1	1	SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 83
2	2	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
3	3	join citizens across the Lone Star State in celebrating the
4	4	preservation of the Official State Bison Herd of Texas at Caprock
5	5	Canyons State Park; and
6	6	WHEREAS, American bison are a symbol of the historical
7	7	American West, and the majestic Southern Plains bison have
8	8	endured as an icon of our state's heritage, spirit, and culture;
9	9	once on the brink of extinction, the Texas State Bison Herd
10	10	serves as a link to our past and as a symbol for an optimistic
11	11	future; and
12	12	WHEREAS, The Texas State Bison Herd remains a treasured
13	13	piece of our heritage due to the efforts of legendary rancher
14	14	Charles Goodnight, who began preserving the herd on his Panhandle
15	15	ranch in 1878 at the urging of his wife; against all odds, the
16	16	herd has managed to survive for nearly 140 years, and today, the
17	17	majestic animals represent the last of the surviving Southern
18	18	Plains bison; and
19	19	WHEREAS, The Texas State Bison Herd was donated to the
20	20	Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and moved to Caprock Canyons
21	21	State Park in 1997; since that time, the herd has grown from 37 to
22	22	150 bison; and
23	23	WHEREAS, Over the last 20 years, the staff and volunteers
24	24	at Caprock Canyons State Park have worked diligently to conserve,
25	25	preserve, and restore the Texas State Bison Herd; as a result of
26	26	their efforts, Texans will be able to benefit from Charles
27	27	Goodnight's vision for generations to come; now, therefore, be it
28	28	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
29	29	Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend the staff and
30	30	volunteers of Caprock Canyons State Park and all who have helped
31	31	the Official State Bison Herd of Texas survive and remain a
32	32	cherished piece of the American West and Texas culture and extend
33	33	to them best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
34	34	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
35	35	Caprock Canyons State Park as an expression of esteem from the
36	36	Texas Senate.
