55 WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew
66 to a close with the passing of United States Army Colonel (Ret.)
77 Kay L. Wieland of Texarkana on May 26, 2017, at the age of 90; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Arthur and Clurrice Wieland, Kay
99 Wieland was born in Wyoming on May 5, 1927, and graduated from
1010 Mitchell High School in Nebraska; he was drafted into the army in
1111 1945 and subsequently completed three years of service in
1212 Germany; after returning stateside, he earned a bachelor's
1313 degree from the University of Arizona; and
1414 WHEREAS, Mr. Wieland began his career as a commissioned
1515 officer in the United States Army with the 82nd Airborne Division
1616 in Fort Bragg, North Carolina; over the years, he was stationed
1717 in Austria, Germany, Korea, and Vietnam, and he served as a
1818 platoon leader, company commander, and battalion commander
1919 before being named depot commander of the Red River Army Depot in
2020 Texarkana; his staff assignments included battalion operations
2121 officer, army branch assignment officer, command chief of staff,
2222 and executive officer to the assistant chief of staff for
2323 logistics with the United States Department of the Army; Colonel
2424 Wieland attended the United States Army Command and General Staff
2525 College and the United States Army War College, and he was a
2626 fellow of the Strategic Studies Institute; he also completed a
2727 master's degree in business administration at the University of
2828 Alabama; and
2929 WHEREAS, In addition to serving his country with
3030 distinction, Colonel Wieland contributed to his community as a
3131 member of the boards of the New Boston General Hospital and the
3232 Tri-State chapter of the American Red Cross and as director of
3333 the Atlanta Area Chamber of Commerce in Texas; he also taught
3434 management classes at East Texas State University and Texarkana
3535 College, and in his leisure hours, he loved spending time in the
3636 great outdoors, especially hunting and fly fishing; and
3737 WHEREAS, Above all else, Colonel Wieland was deeply
3838 devoted to his family; he shared six decades of marriage with his
3939 wife and high school sweetheart, Jacquelyn, before her passing,
4040 and he took immense pride in their daughter, Diana; and
4141 WHEREAS, Colonel Wieland possessed the courage and
4242 initiative that marked the finest members of his generation, and
4343 his exemplary service in behalf of his fellow citizens will
4444 forever inspire all who had the privilege to know him; now,
4545 therefore, be it
4646 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
4747 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
4848 of Colonel Kay L. Wieland and extend heartfelt sympathy to his
4949 relatives and friends; and, be it further
5050 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5151 his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do
5252 so in memory of Colonel Kay L. Wieland.
