| 6 | 12 | | Texas Success Initiative for students who achieve a certain score |

| 8 | 14 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 9 | 15 | | SECTION 1. Section 51.338, Education Code, is amended by |
|---|
| 10 | 16 | | adding Subsection (h) to read as follows: |
|---|
| 11 | 17 | | (h) A student who has achieved a score set by the board on a |
|---|
| 12 | 18 | | high school equivalency examination administered under Section |
|---|
| 13 | 19 | | 7.111 is exempt from the requirements of this subchapter. The |
|---|
| 14 | 20 | | commissioner of higher education by rule shall establish the period |
|---|
| 15 | 21 | | for which an exemption under this subsection is valid. |
|---|
| 16 | 22 | | SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies |
|---|
| 17 | 23 | | beginning with the assessment of entering undergraduate students at |
|---|
| 18 | 24 | | public institutions of higher education for the 2020 fall semester. |
|---|
| 19 | 25 | | The assessment of an entering undergraduate student for an academic |
|---|
| 20 | 26 | | term before that semester is governed by the law in effect before |
|---|
| 21 | 27 | | the effective date of this Act, and that law is continued in effect |
|---|
| 22 | 28 | | for that purpose. |

| 23 | 29 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2019. |
