55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to an exemption for teachers and retired teachers from the
88 payment of a fee for registration of a motor vehicle.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Subchapter J, Chapter 502, Transportation Code,
1111 is amended by adding Section 502.458 to read as follows:
1212 Sec. 502.458. TEACHER AND RETIRED TEACHER EXEMPTION. (a)
1313 In this section, "teacher" means a principal, supervisor, classroom
1414 teacher, school counselor, or other full-time professional
1515 employee who is required to hold a certificate issued under
1616 Subchapter B, Chapter 21, Education Code.
1717 (b) A vehicle may be registered without payment if the
1818 vehicle is owned or leased by a person who is a teacher or a retired
1919 teacher.
2020 (c) An application for registration under Subsection (b)
2121 must be accompanied by proof of the applicant's entitlement to the
2222 exemption. The department shall adopt rules relating to the proof
2323 of entitlement to the exemption, which may include, for retired
2424 teachers, statements or other communications issued by the Teacher
2525 Retirement System of Texas that evidence payment of an annuity from
2626 the system.
2727 SECTION 2. Section 502.458, Transportation Code, as added
2828 by this Act, applies only to an application submitted on or after
2929 the effective date of this Act.
3030 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2019.
