7 | 14 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

8 | 15 | | SECTION 1. Article 56.42(d), Code of Criminal Procedure, is |
---|
9 | 16 | | amended to read as follows: |
---|
10 | 17 | | (d) A [victim who is a] victim of stalking, family violence, |
---|
11 | 18 | | or trafficking of persons, [or] a victim of sexual assault who is |
---|
12 | 19 | | assaulted in the victim's place of residence, or a child who is a |
---|
13 | 20 | | victim of a murder attempt in the child's place of residence may |
---|
14 | 21 | | receive a onetime-only assistance payment in an amount not to |
---|
15 | 22 | | exceed: |
---|
16 | 23 | | (1) $2,000 to be used for relocation expenses, |
---|
17 | 24 | | including expenses for rental deposit, utility connections, |
---|
18 | 25 | | expenses relating to the moving of belongings, motor vehicle |
---|
19 | 26 | | mileage expenses, and for out-of-state moves, transportation, |
---|
20 | 27 | | lodging, and meals; and |
---|
21 | 28 | | (2) $1,800 to be used for housing rental expenses. |

22 | 29 | | SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only |
---|
23 | 30 | | to a victim of a criminal offense committed on or after the |
---|
24 | 31 | | effective date of this Act. A criminal offense committed before the |
---|
25 | 32 | | effective date of this Act is governed by the law in effect on the |
---|
26 | 33 | | date the offense was committed, and the former law is continued in |
---|
27 | 34 | | effect for that purpose. For purposes of this section, a criminal |
---|
28 | 35 | | offense was committed before the effective date of this Act if any |
---|
29 | 36 | | element of the offense occurred before that date. |
---|
30 | 37 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2019. |
