6	6	AN ACT
7	7	relating to the inclusion in the definition of a medical and dental
8	8	unit of the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin
9	9	and the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Rio Grande
10	10	Valley and the participation of those schools in the Joint
11	11	Admission Medical Program.
12	12	BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
13	13	SECTION 1. Section 51.821(4), Education Code, is amended to
14	14	read as follows:
15	15	(4) "Participating medical school" means each of the
16	16	following entities:
17	17	(A) the medical school at The University of Texas
18	18	Health Science Center at Houston;
19	19	(B) the medical school at The University of Texas
20	20	Southwestern Medical Center;
21	21	(C) the medical school at The University of Texas
22	22	Health Science Center at San Antonio;
23	23	(D) the medical school at The University of Texas
24	24	Medical Branch at Galveston;
25	25	(E) the medical school at the Texas Tech
26	26	University Health Sciences Center at Lubbock;
27	27	(F) the medical school at the Texas Tech
28	28	University Health Sciences Center at El Paso;
29	29	(G) the Baylor College of Medicine;
30	30	(H) the college of osteopathic medicine at the
31	31	University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth;
32	32	[and]
33	33	(I) the medical school at The Texas A&M
34	34	University System Health Science Center;
35	35	(J) the medical school at The University of Texas
36	36	at Austin; and
37	37	(K) the medical school at The University of Texas
38	38	Rio Grande Valley.
39	39	SECTION 2. Section 61.003(5), Education Code, is amended to
40	40	read as follows:
41	41	(5) "Medical and dental unit" means The Texas A&M
42	42	University System Health Science Center and its component
43	43	institutions, agencies, and programs; the Texas Tech University
44	44	Health Sciences Center; the Texas Tech University Health Sciences
45	45	Center at El Paso; The University of Texas Medical Branch at
46	46	Galveston; The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; The
47	47	University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio; The University
48	48	of Texas Dental Branch at Houston; The University of Texas M. D.
49	49	Anderson Cancer Center; The University of Texas Graduate School of
50	50	Biomedical Sciences at Houston; The University of Texas Dental
51	51	School at San Antonio; The University of Texas Medical School at
52	52	Houston; the Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at
53	53	Austin; the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Rio Grande
54	54	Valley [The University of Texas Health Science Center--South Texas
55	55	and its component institutions, if established under Subchapter N,
56	56	Chapter 74]; the nursing institutions of The Texas A&M University
57	57	System and The University of Texas System; and The University of
58	58	Texas School of Public Health at Houston; and such other medical or
59	59	dental schools as may be established by statute or as provided in
60	60	this chapter.
61	61	SECTION 3. (a) As soon as practicable after the effective
62	62	date of this Act, the medical schools at The University of Texas at
63	63	Austin and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley each shall:
64	64	(1) enter into the agreement with the Joint Admission
65	65	Medical Program Council required by Section 51.829, Education Code;
66	66	and
67	67	(2) select an appropriate faculty member to represent
68	68	the respective medical school on the council.
69	69	(b) The medical schools at The University of Texas at Austin
70	70	and The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley each shall provide
71	71	internships and mentoring under the Joint Admission Medical Program
72	72	as appropriate beginning with the 2019-2020 academic year, but are
73	73	not required before the 2022-2023 academic year to admit
74	74	participating students to the medical schools under the program.
75	75	SECTION 4. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
76	76	a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
77	77	provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
78	78	Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
79	79	Act takes effect September 1, 2019.
