9 | 9 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
10 | 10 | SECTION 1. The heading to Section 13.048, Election Code, is | |
11 | 11 | amended to read as follows: | |
12 | 12 | Sec. 13.048. [OPTIONAL] PROCEDURE FOR APPOINTMENT OF | |
13 | 13 | VOLUNTEER DEPUTY REGISTRAR; PROVISION OF TRAINING MATERIALS ON | |
14 | 14 | SECRETARY OF STATE WEBSITE. | |
15 | 15 | SECTION 2. Sections 13.048(a) and (c), Election Code, are | |
16 | 16 | amended to read as follows: | |
17 | 17 | (a) A county shall [may] adopt a method of appointment for | |
18 | 18 | volunteer deputy registrars prescribed by the secretary of state or | |
19 | 19 | developed by the county and approved by the secretary of state under | |
20 | 20 | this section that provides for the training and examination of | |
21 | 21 | potential volunteer deputy registrars. | |
22 | 22 | (c) Under [A county that has adopted] the method adopted | |
23 | 23 | under this section, a county: | |
24 | 24 | (1) shall administer the required examination to a | |
25 | 25 | potential volunteer deputy registrar at any time during the county | |
26 | 26 | voter registrar's regular business hours; and | |
27 | 27 | (2) is not required to hold in-person training | |
28 | 28 | sessions for potential volunteer deputy registrars. | |
29 | 29 | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2019. |
