| 5 | 11 | | relating to court reporter service fees in certain counties. |

| 6 | 12 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 7 | 13 | | SECTION 1. Section 51.601(a-1), Government Code, is amended |
|---|
| 8 | 14 | | to read as follows: |
|---|
| 9 | 15 | | (a-1) Notwithstanding Subsection (a), the clerk of each |
|---|
| 10 | 16 | | court that has an official court reporter and that serves a county |
|---|
| 11 | 17 | | with a population of 750,000 or more and located on the Texas-Mexico |
|---|
| 12 | 18 | | border [that contains a municipality with a population of 500,000 |
|---|
| 13 | 19 | | or more] shall collect a court reporter service fee of $30 as a |
|---|
| 14 | 20 | | court cost in each civil case filed with the clerk to maintain a |
|---|
| 15 | 21 | | court reporter who is available for assignment in the court. |
|---|
| 16 | 22 | | SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only |
|---|
| 17 | 23 | | to a case filed with the clerk of a court that has an official court |
|---|
| 18 | 24 | | reporter on or after the effective date of this Act. A case filed |
|---|
| 19 | 25 | | with the clerk of the court before the effective date of this Act is |
|---|
| 20 | 26 | | governed by the law as it existed immediately before the effective |
|---|
| 21 | 27 | | date of this Act, and the former law is continued in effect for that |
|---|
| 22 | 28 | | purpose. |
|---|
| 23 | 29 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 24 | 30 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 25 | 31 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 26 | 32 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 27 | 33 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2019. |
