66 AN ACT
77 relating to Holocaust Remembrance Week in public schools.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 29, Education Code, is
1010 amended by adding Section 29.9072 to read as follows:
1111 Sec. 29.9072. HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE WEEK. (a) In this
1212 section, "Holocaust" has the meaning assigned by Section 449.001,
1313 Government Code.
1414 (b) To educate students about the Holocaust and inspire in
1515 students a sense of responsibility to recognize and uphold human
1616 value and to prevent future atrocities, the governor shall
1717 designate a week to be known as Holocaust Remembrance Week in public
1818 schools.
1919 (c) Holocaust Remembrance Week shall include
2020 age-appropriate instruction, as determined by each school
2121 district. Instruction shall include:
2222 (1) information about the history of and lessons
2323 learned from the Holocaust;
2424 (2) participation, in person or using technology, in
2525 learning projects about the Holocaust; and
2626 (3) the use of materials developed or approved by the
2727 Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission.
2828 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2019-2020
2929 school year.
3030 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3131 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3232 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3333 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3434 Act takes effect September 1, 2019.
