9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 1701.253, Occupations Code, is amended |
---|
11 | 11 | | by adding Subsection (p) to read as follows: |
---|
12 | 12 | | (p) As part of the minimum curriculum requirements, the |
---|
13 | 13 | | commission shall require an officer to complete a comprehensive |
---|
14 | 14 | | education and training program on identifying, communicating with, |
---|
15 | 15 | | and supporting individuals with disabilities. An officer shall |
---|
16 | 16 | | complete the program required under this subsection not later than |
---|
17 | 17 | | the second anniversary of the date the officer is licensed under |
---|
18 | 18 | | this chapter unless the officer completes the program as part of the |
---|
19 | 19 | | officer's basic training course. |
---|
20 | 20 | | SECTION 2. Section 1701.402, Occupations Code, is amended |
---|
21 | 21 | | by adding Subsection (o) to read as follows: |
---|
22 | 22 | | (o) As a requirement for an intermediate or advanced |
---|
23 | 23 | | proficiency certificate issued by the commission, an officer must |
---|
24 | 24 | | complete the comprehensive education and training program on |
---|
25 | 25 | | identifying, communicating with, and supporting individuals with |
---|
26 | 26 | | disabilities established by the commission under Section |
---|
27 | 27 | | 1701.253(p). |
---|
28 | 28 | | SECTION 3. As soon as practicable after the effective date |
---|
29 | 29 | | of this Act, the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement shall adopt the |
---|
30 | 30 | | rules necessary to implement Sections 1701.253(p) and 1701.402(o), |
---|
31 | 31 | | Occupations Code, as added by this Act. |
---|
32 | 32 | | SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2019. |
