66 AN ACT
77 relating to peace officer education and training on individuals
88 with disabilities.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Section 1701.253, Occupations Code, is amended
1111 by adding Subsection (p) to read as follows:
1212 (p) As part of the minimum curriculum requirements, the
1313 commission shall require an officer to complete a comprehensive
1414 education and training program on identifying, communicating with,
1515 and supporting individuals with disabilities. An officer shall
1616 complete the program required under this subsection not later than
1717 the second anniversary of the date the officer is licensed under
1818 this chapter unless the officer completes the program as part of the
1919 officer's basic training course.
2020 SECTION 2. Section 1701.402, Occupations Code, is amended
2121 by adding Subsection (o) to read as follows:
2222 (o) As a requirement for an intermediate or advanced
2323 proficiency certificate issued by the commission, an officer must
2424 complete the comprehensive education and training program on
2525 identifying, communicating with, and supporting individuals with
2626 disabilities established by the commission under Section
2727 1701.253(p).
2828 SECTION 3. As soon as practicable after the effective date
2929 of this Act, the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement shall adopt the
3030 rules necessary to implement Sections 1701.253(p) and 1701.402(o),
3131 Occupations Code, as added by this Act.
3232 SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2019.
