66 AN ACT
77 relating to a requirement that school districts and open-enrollment
88 charter schools use metal detectors on each campus.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 37, Education Code, is
1111 amended by adding Section 37.113 to read as follows:
1212 Sec. 37.113. REQUIRED METAL DETECTORS. At each school
1313 building located on a campus in which students attend class or
1414 school-sponsored activities, a school district or open-enrollment
1515 charter school shall screen persons entering the building for
1616 weapons by installing a walk-through metal detector or using a
1717 handheld metal detector at each entrance to the building that is
1818 accessible from the outside.
1919 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2019-2020
2020 school year.
2121 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2222 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2323 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2424 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2525 Act takes effect September 1, 2019.
