| 7 | 7 | | relating to the expiration date of a driver's license; increasing a |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | fee. |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Section 521.271(a), Transportation Code, is |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | (a) Each original driver's license, provisional license, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | learner license, or occupational driver's license issued to an |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | applicant who is a citizen, national, or legal permanent resident |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | of the United States or a refugee or asylee lawfully admitted into |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the United States expires as follows: |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | (1) except as provided by Section 521.2711, a driver's |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | license expires on the eighth [first birthday of the license holder |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | occurring after the sixth] anniversary of the date of the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | application; |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | (2) a provisional license expires on the 18th birthday |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | of the license holder; |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | (3) a learner license expires on the 18th birthday of |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | the license holder; |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | (4) an occupational driver's license expires on the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | first anniversary of the court order granting the license; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | (5) unless an earlier date is otherwise provided, a |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | driver's license issued to a person whose residence or domicile is a |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | correctional facility or a parole facility expires on the first |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | birthday of the license holder occurring after the first |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | anniversary of the date of issuance. |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | SECTION 2. Section 521.421(a), Transportation Code, is |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | (a) The fee for issuance or renewal of a license not |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | otherwise provided for by this section is $32 [$24]. |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | SECTION 3. The changes in law made by this Act to Sections |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | 521.271 and 521.421, Transportation Code, apply only to a driver's |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | license issued or renewed on or after June 1, 2020. A driver's |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | license issued or renewed before June 1, 2020, is governed by the |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | law in effect immediately before the effective date of this Act, and |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | the former law is continued in effect for that purpose. |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2019. |
