| 11 | 12 | | highest military award for valor; each year, local citizens join |

| 12 | 13 | | together to fund travel costs and other expenses to bring medal |

| 13 | 14 | | recipients to the city for a special series of events; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Sergeant Beikirch, a veteran of the United States |

| 15 | 16 | | Army, served as a medical aidman with Company B of the 5th Special |

| 16 | 17 | | Forces Group during the Vietnam War; tasked with defending Camp Dak |

| 17 | 18 | | Seang from a harrowing assault, he braved a hail of enemy bullets to |

| 18 | 19 | | come to the aid of his injured comrades; despite being seriously |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | wounded by fragments from an exploding mortar shell, he was able to |

| 20 | 21 | | carry an injured American officer to a medical aid station, before |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | immediately returning to the line of fire to assist others, |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | including a Vietnamese soldier who was barely clinging to life; and |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Demonstrating extraordinary courage in the line of |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | duty, Gary B. Beikirch fulfilled the highest ideals of the United |

| 25 | 26 | | States armed forces, and he has earned the lasting admiration of a |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | grateful nation; now, therefore, be it |

| 27 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas |
