56 WHEREAS, The valiant military service of Gary B. Beikirch is
67 being saluted as part of the 2019 Medal of Honor Host City Weekend
78 in Gainesville; and
89 WHEREAS, Established in 2001, Gainesville's Medal of Honor
910 Host City Program acknowledges the heroism and sacrifice of
1011 individuals who have earned the Medal of Honor, the nation's
1112 highest military award for valor; each year, local citizens join
1213 together to fund travel costs and other expenses to bring medal
1314 recipients to the city for a special series of events; and
1415 WHEREAS, Sergeant Beikirch, a veteran of the United States
1516 Army, served as a medical aidman with Company B of the 5th Special
1617 Forces Group during the Vietnam War; tasked with defending Camp Dak
1718 Seang from a harrowing assault, he braved a hail of enemy bullets to
1819 come to the aid of his injured comrades; despite being seriously
1920 wounded by fragments from an exploding mortar shell, he was able to
2021 carry an injured American officer to a medical aid station, before
2122 immediately returning to the line of fire to assist others,
2223 including a Vietnamese soldier who was barely clinging to life; and
2324 WHEREAS, Demonstrating extraordinary courage in the line of
2425 duty, Gary B. Beikirch fulfilled the highest ideals of the United
2526 States armed forces, and he has earned the lasting admiration of a
2627 grateful nation; now, therefore, be it
2728 RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas
2829 hereby pay tribute to Gary B. Beikirch on the occasion of the 2019
2930 Medal of Honor Host City Weekend in Gainesville and commend him for
3031 his exemplary service in the defense of our nation; and, be it
3132 further
3233 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3334 prepared for Mr. Beikirch as an expression of high regard by the
3435 Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
