| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Established in 2001, Gainesville's Medal of Honor |

| 9 | 10 | | Host City Program acknowledges the heroism and sacrifice of |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | individuals who have earned the Medal of Honor, the nation's |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | highest military award for valor; each year, local citizens join |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | together to fund travel costs and other expenses to bring medal |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | recipients to the city for a special series of events; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Gary Michael Rose was a sergeant in the U.S. Army |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | during the Vietnam War; a medic, he served with a company-sized |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | exploitation force, the 5th Special Forces Group, 1st Special |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | Forces; from September 11 to 14, 1970, his company was continuously |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | engaged by a well-armed and much larger hostile force; repeatedly |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | exposed to heavy fire while treating the wounded, he was injured |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | himself when a B-40 rocket landed just meters away; nevertheless, |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | he carried on, rendering aid and trying to assist during a |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | helicopter rescue attempt that had to be aborted under an |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | unrelenting assault; and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, For two days, Sergeant Rose continued to brave enemy |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | fire to help the wounded; when the extraction helicopters arrived, |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | he loaded injured comrades, moved others awaiting evacuation, and |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | assisted in keeping the hostile force at bay; aboard the final |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | helicopter, as the enemy closed in, he saved the life of the door |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | gunner; he was injured again when the chopper crashed, but he pulled |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | others from the burning wreckage and administered aid until another |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | helicopter arrived; and |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Demonstrating extraordinary courage in the line of |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | duty, Gary Michael Rose fulfilled the highest ideals of the United |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | States armed forces, and he has earned the lasting admiration of a |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | grateful nation; now, therefore, be it |

| 36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas |
